ENGLAND & IRELAND: LANDS OF ENCHANTMENT
On the surface, England and Ireland might appear quite similar; both landscapes feature ancient castles and picturesque coastlines, welcoming pubs and countless B&Bs. But scratch the surface and you’ll find that there are as many differences as there are similarities in each country’s history and the way they look at everyday life.
It’s those differences that allow you to take away something special from both.
Ireland is a place where exterior facades mean little and where local knowledge is everything. Little may be what it appears, but there’s usually more to something than what you see. Whereas England is more like a cultivated garden that is trimmed with regularity, so there’s a sense of continuity and order.
England and Ireland readily showcase their histories. In Ireland, when you drive the narrow
roads with their parallel stonewalls, you’re traveling through the same rolling hills that attracted the Iron Age Celts from Central Europe in 500 B.C. You can still find remnants of their art in the National Museum in Dublin where ample examples of gold jewelry are major exhibits.
In modern Dublin, Irish prosperity is reflected in its grand hotels, continental restaurants, bistros and vibrant pubs. There’s nothing quite like spending an evening in an Irish pub with a pint of Guinness and
listening to the local storytellers.
London is one of the greatest draws for visitors
to England. Its magnificent museums, galleries, theatre productions, expansive parks and charming pubs warm the hearts of worldly travelers – many of whom visit this city time and time again.
The must-see list here should include a visit to Buckingham Palace to see the changing of the guard; Westminster Abbey, the site of every royal
coronation except two since 1066; and a tour of the Tower of London, shrouded in dark, sinister history.
From London, relatively easy day trips can be made to the university towns of Oxford and Cambridge, as well as Windsor, home of the legendary Windsor Castle. Be sure to also allow time to explore England’s Cotswolds and serene Lake District, considered to be one of Britain’s most beautiful regions.
