YOUR CAR’S SECRET BATTERY LIFE
If you could go undercover, under the hood, you might gain a new appreciation for your hard-working battery. Rechargeable batteries were cutting-edge technology circa 1859, and today they still deliver the high current required by vehicle starter motors.
Like produce, batteries are best bought fresh. You want to buy a battery manufactured less than six months ago. To determine a battery’s birthday, look for a two-character letter-number date code stamped into the top or side of the battery case, or printed on the label. For most manufacturers, the initial letter A-M (I is not used) indicates the month of manufacture, and the following number tells the year. For example, G4 means the battery was produced in July 2014. A few battery makers place the year digit before the month letter, or use a unique code format. If you have any questions about the age of a battery you are purchasing, ask the seller to show you the date code and explain what it means.
Lead-acid batteries typically last from three to five years, but driving habits, extreme weather, and lack of maintenance will shorten that lifespan. Automotive batteries also last longest when maintained at or near a full state of charge; repeated or significant discharging of a battery will cause it to fail sooner. However, when it comes to charging batteries, you can have too much – or too little – of a good thing.
Too many accessories can be a big turn-off in fashion and in your car’s performance. When batteries mysteriously drain, aftermarket accessories should be at the top of your troubleshooting list. Make a habit of turning off any add-on such as: radio, navigation system, media player, or other electrical device before you shut down the engine. Under-use can also bring a premature death to your battery. The power required to maintain computer memories, even when the ignition is off, will gradually discharge the battery over time. If your vehicle will sit idle for more than a few weeks, invest in a Battery Tender® charger to keep the battery fully charged.
Extreme weather definitely saps battery power. Those acquainted with cold winter
