THE AWE-INSPIRING CANADIAN ROCKIES
By Christina Marangolo, AAA Northampton County Travel Agent
Awe-inspiring, breathtaking and amazing are a few words to describe the beauty of the Canadian Rockies. I recently experienced this with Rocky Mountaineer. The journey began in Calgary at the Fairmont Palliser, a beautiful historic hotel that was once part of the original train station.
It was a 30-minute ride to the helipad in Kananaskis, where the group enjoyed a spectacular 12-minute Summit Helicopter Tour. We continued on to Banff and spent the next two nights at the Rimrock Resort. This gorgeous mountainside resort is just a few steps from the Hot Springs and the Banff Gondola to Sulphur Mountain. You will find many dining options here, including one of only five AAA/CAA five diamond restaurants in Canada. Our stay here included the “ROAM” pass, which is the shuttle into downtown, where you will find plenty of fantastic shopping and dining options.
On the way to Lake Louise we made multiple stops at some incredible attractions, including a natural rock bridge, the Spiral Tunnels, the stunning Emerald Lake and Bow Summit. The following day we traveled along the Icefields Parkway, stopping at Athabasca Falls and continuing on to the Columbia Icefield where we rode the Ice Explorer onto the glacier. This was an absolutely incredible experience.
While in Jasper we stayed at the Sawridge Inn, a lovely hotel within walking distance to town. Be prepared to see elk wandering on the streets of Jasper, what an unusual sight! The next morning we boarded the Rocky Mountaineer, headed toward Kamloops. We enjoyed the GoldLeaf service, which features large, comfortable seats, a domed window rail car, lower-level dining room, baggage delivery and much more. We viewed many beautiful sights along the way, including Mount Robson, and wildlife such as bald eagles, mountain goats and bighorn sheep.
The Thompson Inn and Convention Center is where we spent the night in Kamloops. In the morning we were back on the Rocky Mountaineer, passing the Cascade Mountains, Frasier Valley and the Coastal Mountains into Vancouver.
While in Vancouver we were guided by Vancouver Tourism to some of their main attractions, including the Capilano Suspension Bridge, FlyOver
Canada, Vancouver Lookout, and Granville Island.
The last two nights of the trip were spent at the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Vancouver, a luxury accommodation in the midst of all the action.
This was a most unique and incredible journey that is worthy of being on everyone’s bucket
list! Rocky Mountaineer offers many different independent tours and has valuable AAA member benefits and discounts.
