Why Networks Matter
Information about Medicare provided by Alight Retiree Health Solutions
When you’re shopping for Medicare coverage, it’s important to understand the health plan’s network — the doctors and other providers a plan contracts with to provide care to you at a lower cost. Make sure your doctors are in network to avoid paying more.
MEDICARE ADVANTAGE PLANS
If you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, you could have either a Health Maintenance Organization plan or a Preferred Provider Organization plan.
With an HMO plan, you must get care from doctors in the plan’s network. If you use a doctor outside the network, the plan may not cover the cost. PPO plans have a network of “preferred” doctors, and in most cases, you can see anyone in the network. If you see a doctor that’s not in network, you may pay more.
Networks can change anytime, so check with your doctor to make sure they’re in network.
MEDICARE SUPPLEMENT PLANS
Medicare Supplement plans don’t have networks; you can see any doctor that takes Medicare. If your doctor doesn’t take Medicare, you may pay more, so be sure to ask before your appointment.
Use Medicare.gov’s physician compare tool to find doctors that accept Medicare (medicare.gov/care-compare).
