Road Trip Tips
While the unofficial end to summer arrives with children heading back to school, there’s still time to make memories with an end of summer road trip – even if it’s just a weekend getaway.
Here are some simple tips to improve safety and make your trip a smooth one.
• Visit a AAA Approved Auto Repair facility
to ensure your vehicle is properly maintained. Have your car and tires inspected before beginning your trip.
• Map your route in advance and be prepared for busy roads during the summer travel season, like Labor Day weekend.
• Keep anything of value in the trunk or covered storage area. Make sure any loose objects are secured in the vehicle.
• Remember “safety first.” Make sure everyone is properly restrained by a safety belt or child safety seat to prevent injury in case of a sudden stop, swerve, or collision.
• Get plenty of sleep before the trip, travel at times when you are normally awake, and schedule breaks every two hours or 100 miles to avoid becoming drowsy.
• Keep a cell phone and car charger with you at all times in case of emergency.
• Pack an emergency road kit containing a flashlight and extra batteries, jumper cables, warning devices, a first-aid kit, drinking water and snacks, and a basic tool kit.

TIPS FOR TRAVELING WITH KIDS
• Get the kids excited. Read and talk to them about your destination. AAA Digital TourBooks® are a great resource for information and images on your favorite destinations. Go to AAA.com/TourBooks to get started.
• Build in time. Plan on plenty of stops when driving or while getting through the airport security.
• Pack snacks. When you’re traveling and can’t stop for a full meal, snacks are critical to keep your kids happy and hungry bellies at bay.
