When it comes to the season of giving, people typically find themselves in shortage of two things — time and money. Consumers often wait to start shopping until only weeks or days before the holiday begins, which can put them in stressful circumstances and can lead to making purchases of items they don’t need. But the most wonderful time of the year doesn’t need to be a stressful experience. Start budgeting for the holiday season now
to save precious time and money.
Here are some tips to help you get started:
ESTABLISH A SAVINGS GOAL
Take a look at your holiday spending
from last year to get an idea of what you’ll typically need. Make a list — and check it twice — of items that you usually purchase each year, such as wrapping paper and tape, tree ornaments and lights, and even travel expenses for visiting family.
Set your goal and save weekly. For example, if your goal is to have $1,000 saved by Black
Friday and you begin saving the week of July 1, you will need to set aside about $50 a week to achieve this goal by your deadline.
START SAVING
Open a savings account that is specifically for your holiday expenses. This will help you keep track of your progress and makes it harder for you to use the money you’re saving. High-yield savings accounts are a safe place for you to keep your money;
look for ones that offer great rates and are FDIC insured.
Tip: Your savings account can easily be converted to a “Summer Vacation Fund” after the holidays are over.
CONSIDER REWARDS CREDIT CARDS
Rewards credit cards that earn you cash back or points can be a great tool to use towards your holiday goals. For instance, if someone on your list has a favorite store they shop at, you may be able to trade in points
for a gift card to that retailer. However, keep in mind that when using a credit card, you should only charge what you can pay off each month.
