According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of death for teens
15-18 years old. During National Teen Driver Safety Week
October 18-24, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is teaming up with AAA to help empower parents to discuss the importance of driving safety with their young drivers. This week is the perfect time to begin — and continue — the conversation on driving safety, and to remind parents not
to hand over the car keys until their teen knows the rules of the road.
The greatest dangers for teen drivers are alcohol, inconsistent or no seat belt use, distracted and drowsy driving, speeding, and the number of passengers riding in the vehicle.
Visit page 15 for more information on Teen Driver Safety. For more resources for both teens and parents, visit TeenDriving.AAA.com.
In observance of the Labor Day holiday on Monday, September 7, AAA Southern Pennsylvania offices will be closed. As always, our reliable Roadside Assistance will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The shorter days and fading long evenings mark the end of summer riding season. With the new change of season comes new conditions for motorcyclists to manage while riding.
Watch for riding hazards.
Fall is packed with driving obstacles, such as fallen leaves, whether wet or dry, that accumulate on the road and can become very slick and may make you lose traction. But, the most problematic hazard during autumn is deer season. Deer are most active during the fall months — especially during prime driving hours at dawn and dusk — so you never know when a deer might run out in front of you. Keep your eyes out for any riding hazards so you have time to react.
Wear the proper gear.
Autumn not only brings beautiful changing colors, but many temperature changes. It’s not uncommon for early fall weather to be chilly in the morning but rise to the mid-70s in the afternoon. It’s always a good idea to keep cold weather gear with you in
case you ride longer than anticipated. Leather may not be suitable for summer, but it can protect you from the wind and will keep you comfortable and warm during chilly fall rides.
Frosty and icy surfaces.
Frost can make an appearance on the roadways during the early fall mornings. Make sure you pay close attention to bridges, as they typically freeze before roadways, and railroad crossings or other shaded areas in which the sun might not have melted the frost.
Before you head out on your fall motorcycle ride, make sure you’re covered with emergency roadside service. AAA offers motorcycle coverage with AAA Plus RV® and AAA Premier RV® membership levels. For more information, contact your local AAA at 1-800-222-1469 or visit AAA.com/RV.
