       Circling the
Lone Star State A Boot-Kickin’ Good Time in Texas By Craig Haberle, CTC
Yup, Texas sure is big. But if you know where to go and how to get there, the Lone Star State can be a mighty grand place to visit. So, saddle up and ride along with AAA for a specially selected round-up of Texas treats.
A flight to Dallas-Fort Worth Airport puts you on the right
trail to Waco, for a visit at the Magnolia Market at the Silos. Originally made famous on “HGTV’s Fixer Upper” home improvement show, Magnolia Market is now its own empire of shops and lifestyle programs. Just north of town is Homestead Heritage Traditional Craft Village. Other area attractions include Waco Mammoth National Monument – a paleontological site, the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame, and the Dr. Pepper Museum.
Head on down the road to the state capital at Austin, perhaps most renowned as the “Live Music Capital of the World.” Take a behind-the-scenes music tour and visit the Moody Theatre where “Austin City Limits” is recorded live. This culturally rich city also hosts the LBJ Presidential Library and the Bob Bullock State History Museum. Round out your day with an authentic Texas BBQ.
Travel west for a memorable day in the Texas Hill Country. Tour the LBJ Ranch, where the 36th President was born, lived, died, and is buried. Visit the Wild Seed Farm, the largest working wildflower farm in the country; here you can walk among the gardens and nursery, shop for seeds and herbs, and sip a refreshing drink at the Brewbonnet Biergarden. The community of Fredericksburg reveals its German heritage along Main Street, lined with specialty shops, art galleries, restaurants, and breweries. A tour at L.M. Easterling Custom Boot Company demonstrates the art of fitting and hand crafting top-quality footwear.
The open road calls you next to San Antonio. Central
to this city are the history and legends of “The Alamo.” Important stories are told also at the Spanish Governor’s Palace and the San Fernando Church, as well as at other Spanish colonial missions connected with The Alamo by
a Hike & Bike Trail aside the San Antonio River. Follow the winding route of the popular Paseo Del Rio “Riverwalk”
on a narrated cruise on the river. Local culture and music come alive at “El Mercado,” a Mexican-themed market. Visit Sandy Oaks Olive Orchard for a taste of “Olives with a Texas Accent.”
Yup, there is wine country in Texas and its heart is in
the fun-loving historic town of Grapevine. A stroll along
its main street reveals local wineries’ tasting rooms along with restaurants, shops, and art galleries. The nearby Nash Farm provides insights to the Grape Vine Prairie’s pioneer past with exhibits and restored structures.
The history of Dallas is indelibly linked to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy; the Grassy Knoll and Dealey
Plaza are among its unforgettable sites. The Sixth Floor Museum chronicles and interprets that tragic event and the legacy of JFK.
Wrap up your Texas tour in Fort Worth, where you can witness
a cattle drive through the Stockyards National Historic Site, one of the largest livestock marketing centers in the Southwest. The city’s Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame is the perfect place to hang up your spurs after this special ride through the Lone Star State.
