Healthful Foods
There are more healthful options at sea than ever before. Many cruise lines offer “spa cuisine” options, or low-cal dishes. Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas takes it a step further with an entire restaurant devoted to slimming meals; all the dishes at Devinly Decadence are 500 or fewer calories.
Personalized Plating
AAA cruise expert Christina Bucher has a great tip for when you want privacy and personalized service: “With most cruise lines you can order from the dining room
to your stateroom for a private, romantic dinner at no additional cost. On formal nights I recommend ordering shrimp cocktails, a cheese platter and a bottle of wine to enjoy on your balcony before the main event.”

The days of choosing only between an early or a late seating in the main dining room are swiftly becoming a thing of the past. More cruise lines are offering flexible dining times, providing variety and the opportunity to meet new dining companions.

Most of the cruise lines feature dishes that reflect the cultures of the regions you’re visiting. You can enhance the experience by springing for a lunch or a dinner onshore. On a Danube River cruise, I enjoyed roast lamb in a Bulgarian restaurant to the accompaniment of a lively band, while watching a wedding. Being there to witness this joyous occasion was one of the highlights of my trip.
