Journey to Memorials of World War II
By Craig Haberle, CTC
Turn back the pages of time
to 75 years ago. Put yourself in places in Europe that witnessed positive turning points in World War II. Walk where history was made and heroes left their marks. WITF’s Travel Club invites you
on an unforgettable journey of enrichment and remembrance.
Commence your time travel
in London, where visits to iconic
World War II locations bring to life
the scenes where King, Country
and Churchill were struggling to
maintain their British stiff upper lip
whilst the War on the Continent
was marching ever closer and nightly bombing raids rained terror on their capital and cathedral cities. Peer up high to the tower of Big Ben as you tread the pavements past Parliament, Westminster Abbey, and #10 Downing Street. Go underground to the Churchill War Rooms, a labyrinth of corridors and chambers where the Prime Minister and Cabinet members met to mastermind military and civilian actions. An excursion to Windsor Castle reveals where the Royal Family found refuge during the war and where the castle’s St. George’s Chapel recently hosted a much merrier time during a
royal wedding.
Your crossing of the English Channel is smooth and swift aboard the Eurostar train through its tunnel connection to the Continent. Travel across the countryside of northern France to coastal Normandy for guided tours at the famous Landing Beaches of D-Day. Stand in solemn awe on those same sands and pebbles as you stare inland to the seemingly insurmountable cliffs that faced the Allied troops.
As you view Pegasus Bridge across the Caen Canal and Mulberry Harbor at Arromanche-les-Bains,
your expert guide explains these sites’ strategic importance to the success of the Allied Invasion. Visit the Airbourne Museum in Saint-Mere-Eglise and the Memorial de Caen & Peace Museum to gain further understanding and appreciation of the Allied Forces’ extraordinary efforts. Remembrance and reflection
engulf families and observers alike at the Normandy American Cemetery and the Bayeux Memorial. While in Reims, visit the Musee de la Reddition,
the former college building that served as General Eisenhower’s headquarters where officers of the Third Reich signed a declaration of unconditional surrender.
Then, it’s on to Paris, where you ride along
the grand boulevard Champs-Elysees and circle past the monumental Arc de Triomphe, under which burns France’s Memorial Flame honoring the Unknown Soldier of World War I. A special guided walking tour features a themed route that takes you back in time to World War II sites to tell the stories of what life was like under Nazi occupation and then the Liberation of Paris.
The threads of history link your touring views of the Grand Palais, Ecole Militaire, Pantheon and Luxembourg Gardens. Free time in Paris is easily filled with art immersion at the Louvre, a stroll along boulevards lined with boutiques, or the relaxing enjoyment of your favorite beverage at a sidewalk café. You may prefer to snake through the heart of Paris on a Seine River cruise aboard an open-air bateau-mouche or perhaps attend a classical music concert in the Sainte-Chapelle, a gothic masterpiece. Bid au revoir to France with
a farewell dinner inside Paris’ iconic landmark – the Eiffel Tower.
Your host on this journey of history is WITF’s Scott LaMar, the Executive Producer and on-air host of Smart Talk, WITF FM’s award-winning news and public affairs program. Scott is a lifelong enthusiast of history in general and especially about World War II. Local professional guides’ extensive knowledge will expertly enrich this memorable travel experience. This 10-day tour, May 1-10, 2019, is just one month prior to the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings. Contact your local AAA Travel Agent for more details.
