windmill towers that served this major sugar plantation that began operation in the mid-1600s.
Nature and geology leave a long-lasting impression of St. Lucia. The twin Pitons peaks reveal this island’s volcanic past, but the dormant Soufriere volcano keeps heating adjacent mineral pools at Sulphur Springs where you can take
a relaxing dip or a therapeutic mud bath. Hike ridges in rainforests to view waterfall cascades or sail along the
coastline aboard a catamaran. The
naturally protected harbor at Marigot
Bay has served for centuries as a
hurricane hole where boats can hide
to ride out major storms; it served also
as the filming site of the movie “Doctor
Dolittle.” Birders love to spot the vast
variety of indigenous and migratory
birds found in the forests and along the
shorelines of St. Lucia. The capital city
of Castries features architecture and
cuisine reflecting its French and British
background; its waterfront market
offers locally crafted products and
some strange looking but delightfully
tasty island-grown produce.
The green hills of St. Kitts roll right
down to the sea. Eco-activities abound;
for the adventurous there is a hike up the Mount Liamuiga trail for a “trek through towering trees, tangled vines and tropical flowers to the crater of the 3,792-foot dormant volcano.” If that climb sounds a bit ambitious, maybe more to your liking would be a ride on the last railway in the West Indies aboard double-decker railcars; the current St. Kitts Scenic Railway runs along tracks on which the original train, beginning in the early 1900s, transported sugarcane from inland plantations across rugged terrain to the docks at Basseterre. Perhaps visit the impressively restored Brimstone Hill Fortress, which dates from the late 1600s and was renowned as “The Gibraltar of the Caribbean.” A boat excursion can take you to the nearby sister island of unhurried Nevis, birthplace of Alexander Hamilton, for a taxi tour that can include an uncrowded beach, snorkel and you time.
