Croatia
Ancient, Picturesque and Welcoming
A Wonderful European Escape
Croatia is unlikely to be on your travel bucket list, but it
really should be. This “must see” country is filled with ancient cities, medieval architecture, intriguing cultures, rolling hills, and stunning coastal scenery. As a bonus, the local people are warm and welcoming to tourists. I would recommend it to any traveler looking for a new place to explore in the Mediterranean.
An ancient Roman province, Croatia was ruled from 11 B.C. until about the 5th century A.D. During that time a network of roads was built, giving way to easy access for trade between the Aegean and Black seas and the regions of the Danube.
The country possesses over 1,000 miles of shore and is known for sapphire blue waters sprinkled with many picturesque islands. A ride aside the aquamarine Adriatic will provide
a glimpse of the pretty-as-a-picture scenery and relaxing atmosphere, but tourists will want to ensure they include at least one boat excursion to truly appreciate the country’s rare beauty.
Fresh from both farm and sea, Croatia’s cuisine is full of some of the best Mediterranean flavors, borrowed from neighbors such as Italy, Austria, Eastern Europe, and Greece. A perk gained from the many miles of coastline is the abundant seafood. You’ll find it on every menu, and it is delicious.
Croatia includes several sites that tourists should consider visiting.
Dubrovnik – A UNESCO World Heritage site, located at the southern tip of the country, this ancient harbor town is known for its massive city walls, winding allies and white stone buildings. The diverse array of Gothic, Renaissance a Baroque architecture flanks the cobbled streets, exuding old-world sophistication. The views and lively culture will enchant you. Opatija – This seaside resort town, once a favorite retreat of Roman Caesars and the Hapsburg monarchs in days gone by, serves today as the “Riviera of Croatia” and an Istrian gem. Split – The seafront promenade in Split is a lively, romantic, and picturesque part of the city. The beaches here are also very popular. One of the more notable attractions of Split,
however, is Diocletian’s Palace, said to be the most impressive Roman remnant in Eastern Europe.
Zagreb – More than simply the capital of Croatia, it is a vibrant city brimming with culture. Here you’ll find bustling shopping streets, charming cafés, parks, and museums.
Plitvice Lakes – The setting is something of a fairytale – the unimaginable beauty of 16 terrace lakes and countless waterfalls spilling from lake to lake make it a must.
Croatia is a great vacation destination, either on its own, or
if time permits, when combined with southern Slovenia. When you’re ready to go, utilize your membership benefit by contacting a AAA travel advisor.
