An American Safari: Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons By John T. Garcia
TM
You don’t need a passport or take a 12-hour flight to go on a wildlife safari. In fact, on this tour you will not only see predators in their natural habitat, but you will visit the world’s oldest national park and possibly even mingle with some future Olympic athletes.
Your tour begins as you land in Salt Lake City, Utah, and meet your tour director. You then head north to Idaho to spend the night in Idaho Falls, on the banks of the Snake River. The next day you will head north, along the west side of the Teton Range as you make your way toward West Yellowstone.
As you enter Yellowstone National Park, you will see the beauty that has been thrilling visitors for more than 150 years. Approximately half the geysers in the world are located in Yellowstone, as well as fumaroles and bubbling mud pots. But the star of the park is Old Faithful, so named because officials can predict the next eruption of the cone geyser within 10 minutes. There will be plenty of time to explore the area, see an eruption of Old Faithful and check out the geyser basin before returning to West Yellowstone.
The following day, you will visit the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center to learn about Yellowstone’s top two predators, the grizzly bear and grey wolf. Later in the day, depart on your Yellowstone Wildlife Safari. Local naturalists will lead smaller groups back through Yellowstone National Park. A picnic dinner will be served as the sun begins to set, the best time to see the fauna. Elk, bison, moose, wolves and bears have been known to make an appearance.
The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is next on your itinerary, and you will visit both the Upper Falls and Lower Falls where the Yellowstone River carved
this 1,200-feet-deep and 4,000-feet-wide canyon. In scenic Hayden Valley, keep an eye out for large herds of buffalo and other wildlife. You will finally leave Yellowstone and enter Grand Teton National Park. Believed to be the youngest of the Rocky Mountains, the Grand Tetons rise to 13,775 feet, making it the second-highest peak in Wyoming. You will see the Tetons, Jackson Lake and Snake River from Oxbow Bend and the Snake River Overlook.
The next two nights
will be spent in Jackson, Wyoming, home to plenty of art galleries, shops, attractions and restaurants. A scenic
float trip down the Snake River will showcase the beauty of Grand Teton National Park. Also visit Jackson Lake Lodge, named a National Historic Landmark because of its architecture.
Leaving Jackson, it’s
off to Antelope Island State Park on the Great Salt Lake in Utah. At Buffalo Point there will
be an opportunity to see wildlife on the island, including buffalo (hence the name), deer, antelope, coyote and waterfowl, along with many other animals. It also affords a beautiful view of the lake and the Wasatch Range of the Rocky Mountains.
will be spent touring the sights of Salt Lake City, including the Mormon Tabernacle, State Capitol and This Is The Place Monument. Then it’s off to Park City for a guided tour of the Utah Olympic Park, site of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Many of the guides are Olympians in training, so you might meet the next star of the 2022 Winter Olympics.
As your journey comes to a close you will take home memories of an adventure of a lifetime – all without having your passport stamped.
