                       AAANOW!
                 National Museum are highlights here.
Siem Reap, one of the major highlights of Cambodia,
is where most of the river cruises end their journey. AAA recommends extending your time with a post-cruise hotel stay, as there is much to see here. Indulge your inner adventurer exploring the grand temples of Angkor Archeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the former capital of the Khmer empire. Angkor Wat, the most iconic of all Angkorian temples, was built here in the early 12th century to honor the Hindu god, Vishnu.
To make your experience truly special after Siem Reap, take a quick flight to Hanoi (extensions to Hanoi are offered by most river cruise operators). From ancient temples to French Colonial architecture, Hanoi is worth the trip. While there, be sure to experience a tour of the “Hanoi Hilton,” the infamous prison of American POWs, take an authentic rickshaw ride, see a traditional water puppet show, and cruise Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The backdrop of the bay’s magnificent scenery and dramatic limestone cliffs are the perfect setting for an end to a memorable vacation.
While the Mekong River is beautiful and exciting throughout the year, each season presents its own advantages and challenges. For those looking to experience a river cruise in the area, AAA recommends selecting an itinerary that will
travel between November and April, as this will allow you to experience the region at its finest.
The weather is milder during the November to April timeframe, which means you can spend a full day exploring, thanks to lower humidity and cooler temperatures. From May to October, the region transforms to a lush green wonderland, but the weather is much warmer and prone to tropical storms, which can make touring uncomfortable.
Regardless of the time of year you choose to visit, you are likely to encounter a fair amount of heat and humidity. Here are five must-pack items to ensure your Mekong river cruise is comfortable.
• Comfortable walking shoes – The region presents plenty of chances to explore on foot, but the ground can be uneven, so comfortable shoes with a strong grip are important.
• Moisture wicking clothing – and when visiting temples, wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees. If you choose to travel in the wet season, a raincoat is a must.
• Camera and binoculars – The Mekong is lined with incredible flora and fauna. Bird sanctuaries in Vietnam will also provide ample opportunities to observe rare wildlife.
• Sun hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen – Protect yourself from sun exposure – need we say more?
• Mosquito repellent – The lush countryside and ample water along the river provides prime breeding ground for
mosquitoes – pack a repellent to be safe from unwanted bites.

                                UNESCO World Heritage Sites
You may have noticed many AAA highlighted travel opportunities include visits to UNESCO World Heritage sites. But what is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and why do we recommend itineraries that include them?
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, is dedicated to giving both cultural and natural locations of significance the protection and recognition they deserve. In 1972, UNESCO set the world standard for what places must emulate to be considered a World Heritage site.
Cultural sites must present an outstanding example of human traditions, architecture, values or creative genius to be accepted as a World Heritage site. Natural sites must display significant ecological and biological development either past or present, as well as immense native beauty.
Being designated a UNESCO World Heritage site is an impressive honor, and thus the landmarks that receive this qualification are held to a higher standard.
