Q: What are the rules
of the road concerning yielding to emergency vehicles? Are cars required to run a red light in order for a fire truck and/or ambulance with its sirens on to pass? Would there be any consequences for
I admit it. When it comes to booking a European river cruise I sound like a broken record.
My continued advice is always “just go!” By now you know how popular these sailings are. If there’s a special sale or promotion going on and you wait, you lose.
Europe river cruises sell out fast and travelers are so pleased they often book another itinerary once they get home. I’m recently home from my third river cruise in two years, and this time I was onboard with Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection...and it exceeded every expectation I had.
It was fantastic from beginning to end. My husband, Stewart, and I sailed the picturesque Moselle and
Rhine rivers for 13 days, from Basel, Switzerland to Amsterdam onboard the oh-so-beautiful River Queen. The luxurious, award-winning and all-inclusive Uniworld cruise experience boasts the finest staterooms afloat with sumptuous bedding (all the guests want to buy the bed); marble bathrooms stocked with pampering L’Occitane en Provence amenities; world-class dining that impressed everyone day after day; complimentary spirits, fine local and international wines, soft drinks and regionally-produced craft beers served throughout the day and night. And if that’s not enough, we immersed ourselves in different cultural experiences during the complimentary shore excursions at every port and still stayed connected to home and work with free Wi-Fi onboard.
The intimate and elegantly appointed staterooms are decorated by the renowned design team of Red Carnation Hotels with all the comforts necessary for a restful and pampering retreat as you gently sail on the greatest rivers of the world. I knew we were in for a very special river cruise experience the moment we stepped onboard and were greeted by name from the lovely hotel manager, Selina. Every evening all the guests would gather in the ship’s lounge for
running the red light or breaking any other motor vehicle laws?
M. Daley, Central Pennsylvania
A: Upon approach of an emergency vehicle with lights and sirens activated, a driver shall yield the right-of-way and immediately move over to the right side of the roadway. The law specifically says that the driver must be clear of any intersection before yielding. It would be safer, instead of running the red light,
to simply move off to the right side of the roadway as quickly as possible before entering the intersection.
Q: What are the regulations on muffler noise? There seems to an increase in the amount of vehicles that augment their mufflers to make them louder. Is this not a noise violation or a repair order?
D. Saulsbury, Gettsyburg, PA
A: A vehicle’s muffler gets checked when a vehicle undergoes a state inspection. One of the inspection requirements is that the vehicle must have a muffler that is in proper working order and has no bypass or cutouts. It is illegal for someone to modify the exhaust system
on a vehicle in any way that amplifies the sound. It is usually through the annual inspection process that the majority of problems are identified, and they must be repaired before the vehicle can pass inspection again. Laws do exist that limit the noise levels from mufflers; however, special equipment is needed to measure the sound levels.

pre-dinner cocktails, specialty hors d’oeuvres and a chance to learn about our next day’s itinerary with the cruise manager, Rik. Following dinner many guests would enjoy coffee and dessert or after-dinner drinks while listening to local entertainment or the ship’s piano player in the lounge.

I had the pleasure of
interviewing and spending
time with Captain Furdy Savelkouls, a 32-year-old Dutchman (youngest captain in the fleet) who grew up on the river with both parents and grandparents as river captains – and that includes his grandmother.
Q. What makes a Uniworld River Cruise so very special?
A. The attention to details. No request is too large. We give our guests personalized hospitality, beautiful boutique ships and beautiful destinations. We
are a smaller river cruise company excelling in personalized service.
Q. What sets Uniworld apart from the other European river cruise ships?
A. We have an entire collection of boutique ships. Nobody on the rivers offer such beautiful ships to the guests. The friendliness of our crew goes above and beyond for our guests, from captain to dishwasher.
It is our pleasure to serve you. Our excursions are fantastic and the culinary experience we have onboard is simply amazing. Our food is hands down the best – just ask our guests.
