Allergies may seem as inevitable as taxes. However, there are strategies for dealing with both that minimize the misery.
Allergens trigger the immune system to go into overdrive, causing symptoms ranging from sneezes, itchiness and swollen eyes to life-threatening reactions such as breathing difficulties, loss of consciousness, and shock.

INDOORS:
• Wash bedding weekly.
• Close windows and run air conditioners on the
re-circulate setting.
• Choose wood or tile flooring.
• Shampoo carpets often and use a vacuum that
features a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter.
• Clean or change heating and cooling filters weekly.
• Keep humidity levels in the house below 50% to prevent mold and dust mites.
OUTDOORS:
• Wear large, dark, wraparound sunglasses to protect your eyes from pollen
• Choose a hat with a brim to keep pollen away from your face.
• Minimize time outdoors on days with high pollen counts. Early morning, evenings, and after a rain are the most comfortable times to be outside.
• Shower as soon as you come indoors to remove pollen from your hair.
• Keep your lawn trimmed, but avoid freshly cut grass.
• Carry water. Staying hydrated prevents a buildup of mucus.
Drugstores offer a variety of antihistamines, nasal sprays, eye drops, and decongestants. An
allergist can prescribe medications targeted to your specific sensitivities.
