Plaza de la Cibeles, Madrid, Spain
Granada, Spain
Córdoba, which lies in the southern Spanish region of Andalusìa, was founded by the Romans and due to its strategic importance as the highest navigable point of the Guadalquivir River, it became an important port city, used for shipping
Spanish olive oil, wine and wheat to Ancient Rome. The Mezquita of Córdoba is one of the world’s most impressive buildings, featuring several architectural styles and uniting religious elements of Islam and occidental culture. Today, the Mezquita offers a glimpse of how it was at ancient times, looking back on more than 1,000 years of history. Take time, too, to stroll the narrow streets of the well-preserved Old Jewish Quarter of the city, which retains the traditional urban layout of a medieval Islamic city.
As one of the liveliest cities of Spain, cosmopolitan Madrid seems to never sleep. The action is restaurants and nightclubs hums with activity long into the night. The city’s vitality reflects its Spanish character. While skyscrapers dot the sprawling cityscape, its old-world look is most pervasive. Perched on a plateau 2,000 feet above sea level, it is the highest capital in Europe.
Madrid’s downtown area is the best place for sightseeing. Broad avenidas, twisting medieval alleys, museums, stately gardens and small, dusty taverns are all jumbled together in an area that is easily covered by foot. Visit the Plaza de España, one of the most spectacular spaces in the city, and see the famous Cibeles Fountain depicting Cybele, the Great Mother of the gods and Roman goddess of fertility, who sits atop a chariot drawn by two lions. At the Prado Museum, meet with an art historian to enjoy the works of Velázquez, Goya, Titian, Rubens, and other famous artists.
It is said that Madrid is the city where all the rest of Spain sends it best artists, doctors, chefs and actors to fulfill their careers. This is where all the cities of Spain meet.
