TRAVEL
Highlights of London
and Scenic Cities Beyond
England has long been a favorite destination for Americans.
With centuries of history and tradition, and more than a passing tribute to royal pomp and pageantry, this country seems to never grow tiresome – even for the most seasoned travelers.
In the grand city of London, view world-famous historical attractions such as Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace. Shop in the vibrant West End district, visit one of the city’s acclaimed museums,
or simply stroll through one of the many expansive royal parks. Of course, you’ll also want to pop into a traditional English pub, where friendly banter makes the city all the more charming.
English gardens are perhaps one of the country’s greatest assets, and you’ll find many to visit. Kew Gardens is London’s largest UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the world’s most diverse collection of plants; explore the stunning grounds and architecture. Established in 1673, Chelsea Physic Garden is the oldest botanic garden in London and is also well-worth seeing. Visit London in the month of May and you’ll be treated to the renown RHS Chelsea Flower Show in full bloom; admire the very best show gardens, flowers and gardening from around the world. This flower show has been held for more than a century and represents the pinnacle of garden design.
Beyond central London, in the county of Berkshire, the royal residence of Windsor Castle draws visitors from around the globe to see the world’s oldest and largest occupied castle – scene of the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Walk along the River Thames and take in scenic countryside views.
In the county of Warwickshire, visit Stratford-upon-Avon, the 16th-century birthplace of William Shakespeare, playwright, poet and actor, where you can hear tales of his family life and admire rare artifacts from the Trusts world-class collections. Continue to Anne Hathaway’s Cottage & Gardens to see this historical English home, a thatched farmhouse containing original Tudor furniture where Shakespeare courted his bride.
Meander the cottage’s gardens and grounds, overflowing with fragrant blooms and traditional shrubs.
Continue the journey to Bourton-on-the-Water, one of the prettiest villages in England, where bridges cross the gently flowing River Windrush. Then it’s not too far to scenic Bibury, set along the River Coln, and the historic UNESCO World Heritage City of Bath, which derives its name for the Roman-built baths.
AAA Central Penn’s President & CEO, Jodie Daubert, invites you to join her on a wonderful Insight Vacations tour of Great Britain in May 2023, featuring the famous Chelsea Flower Show.
