Have Fun, But Remain Safe
Michele Van Epps
We are very excited to welcome summer but want to send a reminder to help keep the season fun and safe! Nice weather brings on more traffic and causes many motorists to underestimate risk.
Distracted Driving has become more prevalent on our roadways which often leads to things like crashes, speeding, missing stop signs and crosswalks and failing to switch lanes in a timely manner.
Slow Down, Move Over to protect our roadside workers, including first responders, roadside assistance workers and maintenance crews.
• Always remain alert — avoid distractions and stay focused.
• Watch for disabled vehicles, police activity and construction crews.
• Look ahead and slow down early.
• On multilane roadways, make every attempt to switch lanes.
Allow other vehicles to move over as well.
Do you have a new driver in the family? It’s completely normal for inexperienced drivers to make risky mistakes. Summer is a great time to gain driving experience, but we want to minimize risk.
100 Deadliest Days is the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day when fatal teen crashes increase dramatically.
• Set passenger limits and discuss who is allowed in the car with your teen (whether as a driver or passenger).
• Everyone must buckle up — Every Seat, Every Ride! (no exceptions).
• Lead by example, not by lecture!
• Avoid speeding and driving too close.
• Limit distractions — Hands-free does not equal distraction-free.
Don’t forget that the heat index in the summertime is very high, especially inside your vehicle. It’s never a good idea to leave your children or pets inside the car.
AAA Hudson Valley proudly advocates for safer roadways to keep our community accident-free, give our members peace of mind and protect our first responders.
Michele Van Epps is the President and CEO of AAA Hudson Valley.
