 Protect Your
Summer Fun
With summer in full swing, it’s hard not to enjoy all that comes with it. Get-togethers with family and friends can include something for everyone, from backyard barbecues to games of horseshoe and corn hole; from days spent poolside to children playing on trampolines and swing sets. Our backyards are built for such things and become
a summertime haven. However, as much fun as all of these things can be, it’s imperative to take a good look at some of the possible liability issues that might surface.
Swimming Pools – For those who have their own private swimming pool, this is one of the most enjoyable parts of summer. While we certainly agree and can picture ourselves doing the same thing with an ice-cold glass of lemonade, consider the following: Many property owners do not realize that they could be held liable for any injuries to others that may occur in or around their pool, whether with permission or not. The liability portion of a homeowner’s insurance policy would provide coverage at this point. So, what’s
the best protection? Think about installing outdoor video surveillance of and around the pool area. Ensure there is a secured fence at least four feet high around the pool area. Position solar lights around the pool for extra visibility at night. If you have an above-ground pool, install a lock on the steps or deck leading up to the pool.
Outdoor Grill – There is nothing quite like the smell and taste of fresh barbecue but be aware of safety issues that come along with it. Thousands of fires occur each year because of bad placement of the grill. Where is your grill

located? Does it have plenty of space around it away from the house itself? Remember to start a gas grill with the lid open to avoid gas build-up and possible fire or explosion which could cause injury. Be aware of your surroundings and who is around you. Have some containers of baking soda nearby to smother any out-of-control flames.
Playsets – Children grow up with great memories of letting loose with friends while climbing on the monkey bars, making impromptu slip ’n slides and using
swing sets like they’re on the trapeze. It’s important to recognize that one wrong jump or fall can lead to injuries, broken bones, even paralysis. Again, even with or without permission, it is the property owner who could be held liable for any injuries sustained. Our best advice? Keep backyard fenced and locked. The playset or trampoline should be away from trees or brush. Trampolines should have a lockable net around them. Supervise the children so that you can react as quickly as possible in the event of an accident. Make sure the children are wearing proper shoes or gear, especially when it comes to any playsets with climbing walls. Keep in mind that many insurance carriers restrict or ban trampolines altogether.
Without a doubt, summer is by far one of the most delightful times for gatherings with friends and family. Following the above tips can help keep your summer safe and filled with enjoyable memories.
