Up to date on your coverage options when renting a car?
Going into the summer months, one of the most popular questions asked by our members is, “Does my current car insurance policy cover my rental car?” The short answer is yes. Typically your current auto insurance policy will extend to the vehicle you are renting, mirroring the coverage of your current policy. However, there are
a few things to consider before declining coverages the rental agency might offer you.
1. Bodily injury and property damage liability
are required by New York state law, so you may want to temporarily increase these coverage limits through the rental agency, especially if you are anxious about driving in an unknown area, or a larger city where there is considerably more traffic to navigate. These elements increase the risk of an accident. Be mindful when traveling internationally; Canada is covered on most U.S. auto insurance policies, but in any other country pay particular attention to what the rental agency has to offer.
2. Comprehensive and collision coverage: Does your current auto policy have it? If the answer is no, then it’s a good idea to opt for the coverage through the rental agency. Most rental cars are newer models and, if the rental car is damaged or stolen, your current policy most likely will not apply.
3. Increase in rates: While putting in a claim against your current auto insurance policy does not always guarantee your rate will increase at renewal, for peace of mind, consider what the rental agency has to offer to avoid an impact on your personal policy.
One of the many benefits of being a AAA member is access to exclusive offers from Hertz. Once you enroll with the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program (free to members) and set your preferences (including insurance options), you will be able to skip the counter interview and be on your way much quicker each time you rent.
