The Crossings Park of Colonie
Nestled in suburban Colonie, The Crossings presents
a fantastic place to set up a picnic. Throughout the 130 acres of this park lies an arboretum, meadows and more. Enjoy the fresh air by exploring the rambling shaded paths through the forest and around the large pond of swimming ducks. The Crossings offers much for your little ones, like an adventure on the playground and exploring the medium-sized shrubbery maze.
Tip: Stage your picnic up in the meadow or under the pavilion next to the pond.
Harrier Hill Park
After browsing renowned antique shops and art galleries along Warren Street in Hudson, you’ll be more than ready for some time in the great outdoors. Offering breath-taking panoramas of the Catskill Mountains in the distance, Harrier Hill Park is a lovely place to enjoy the warm weather. Connect with nature by dining al fresco atop this hilltop park surrounded by grasslands and meadows. Walk the 1.9 miles of trails on the 76 acres
of preserved land where you’re sure to find a great spot to stop and eat. If you’re still there to watch the sunset behind the Catskills, you’re in for a real treat. The park does close after sunset so you’ll have to pack up right away.
Long View Park
Long View Park in New Baltimore stands upon retired farmland, which is evident from the old red barn you’ll see upon arrival. Today, this 76-acre property has a grassland pasture, pine glade, quarry area and the remains of an old icehouse on the Hudson River. There’s plenty of nature to behold on the paths leading down to the river. In fact, you may even spot a bald eagle. Don’t forget your picnic blanket if you plan to visit, as this park does not have any tables.
Clermont State Historic Site
Clermont Mansion is an exquisitely conserved piece
of Hudson Valley history in Clermont. Built by Robert Livingston in 1740, the original mansion was burned down by British soldiers during the Revolutionary War. Margaret Livingston, Robert’s wife, led the efforts to have the estate rebuilt. The property remained in the Livingston family for generations until 1962 when the mansion was turned over to New York State to be preserved as a historic site. Clermont’s grounds encompass 500 acres of natural fields, beautifully cultivated gardens and woodlands to be enjoyed by all. The expansive grounds offer many picnic-ready areas complete with views of the Hudson River. Note: There is a per-vehicle fee to enter during the weekend and on holidays between April 1 and Oct. 31.
