    PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
 May is
Bike Safety Month

Wow, school is almost out for the summer.
That bicycle will be getting a lot of use. Just like
the family car, maintenance will make your bike last longer and keep you safe. The chains, spokes, pedals, handlebars, grips, seats and wheels need to be tightened and oiled where needed. The brakes need to be checked and adjusted. Also, make sure the tires are inflated to
the proper tire pressure, this may have to be done every
few weeks. Other things we need to check include reflectors, horns or bells. Bike seat height should be adjusted so that both feet can touch the ground. You might even consider taking the bike to a shop for a simple inexpensive “bike tune-up.”
New York requires helmets for anyone under 14 years old, but we recommend that no matter your age, you keep them on. Brain injuries are life-changing and your bike helmet is very effective at preventing needless injury and death.
Most states classify a bike as a vehicle, meaning you must follow all motor vehicle laws.
The majority of bicycle injuries do not involve motor vehicles. Most are falls, collisions with stationary objects and collisions with other bikes or pedestrians resulting from the bicyclist losing control. Most occur within five blocks from home. Some of the most serious incidents do involve motor vehicles. Teach and demonstrate to your children as if their life depended on it. Much like seat belts, if a parent wears a bike helmet, so will the kids. We all start learning and understanding the rules of the road long before getting a learner’s permit. What are our children learning from watching us drive?

Have a safe and fun-filled summer!
