PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Michele Van Epps
You have probably noticed more traffic and delays on our roadways. Traffic volumes seem to be returning to pre-pandemic levels. We must keep in mind that we share the road with other vehicles, pedestrians and emergency response vehicles. Driving defensively and without distraction is required for all users to safely share our roadways. Remember, first responders and our roadside assistance providers risk their lives every day coming to
our rescue. At all times we must be ready to do our part by remembering to “Slow Down & Move Over!”
Move Over laws require drivers to slow down and, if possible, move over one lane when approaching roadway activities. Today, all 50 states have Move Over laws in place. Some states have even expanded their Move Over law to include roadway maintenance and roadside assistance providers. These laws were put into action to save lives. Don’t let your busy schedule cause you to endanger others.
The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that 23% of drivers report not being aware of the Move Over law in their state. Of those aware (77%), 91% are very comfortable complying with the law. Interestingly, among people who do not comply with Move Over laws, 42% thought this behavior was somewhat or not dangerous at all to roadside emergency workers. This shows that people do not realize how risky it is to be along the side of the road close to fast-moving traffic.
Distracted Driving also contributes to a lack of abiding by Move Over laws, as well as encourages an unsafe environment for walkers, bicycles and, at this time of year, trick-or-treaters. Often, distracted driving leads to things like crashes, speeding, missing stop signs and crosswalks and failing to switch lanes in a timely manner.
AAA recommends that drivers and pedestrians always remain alert. Avoid distractions and stay focused on the road. Watch for disabled vehicles, police activity and construction crews. Always keep plenty of space between your vehicle and others, don’t tailgate, look ahead and slow down early. On multi-lane roadways, make every attempt to switch lanes. Allow other vehicles to move over, as well.
AAA Hudson Valley proudly advocates for safer mobility for all. Our roadways are a community assist. Driving is a privilege that comes with responsibility. Let’s all work together to reduce crashes. Lives can be saved and injuries prevented.
Michele Van Epps is the President and CEO of AAA Hudson Valley.
