VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA: GEM OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST
Considered by many to be one of the most beautiful and interesting cities in North America, cosmopolitan Vancouver, British Columbia is a wonderful tourist destination, known especially for its colorful neighborhoods, energetic nightlife and Pacific Northwest outdoor lifestyle. It also serves as a busy port for Alaska cruises May through October.
Located on the mainland of British Columbia, amid towering mountains, rainforests, and the sparkling Pacific Ocean, this attractive city exudes beauty and a sense of excitement. There is much to see and experience here – outdoor adventure, cultural attractions, entertainment venues, exceptional cuisine, theatre and shopping.
One of the city’s biggest draws for residents and visitors alike is Granville Island. The Granville Island Pubic Market, which can be reached by mini-tug- boat ferries, serves as a hub of activity, with rows of stalls offering fresh produce, gourmet foods, bakery goods and seafood. Enjoy the local seafood while dining at a waterfront restaurant with picturesque harbor views, or perhaps stroll through an art gallery or take in a show at one of the many theatres. In the evening hours the nightlife heats
up on Granville Street in the many restraunts, bars and nightclubs.
Vancouver’s oldest neighborhood, Gastown, grew from a single travern founded in 1867. Today, the district retains its historic charm and independent spirit. Victorian architecture houses a thriving fashion scene, décor boutiques, galleries and eateries. Vancouver's Chinatown, established in the 1890s, has been humming busily for more than a century with vivid colors, exotic cuisine and vibant culture. Rich in history and architecture,
this area east of downtown boasts North America's third-largest Chinatown after New York and
San Francisco.
At the West End of Vancouver, which is situated
close to the downtown area, parks and beaches
are the main attractions. Walk or bike through the neighborhood and along the waterfront seawall to get a true feel for how many Vancouver residents live. Kayaking and paddleboarding are other popular activities. The West End is also the gateway to famous Stanley Park, which offers nearly 1,000 acres of hiking trails, as well as beaches, forests, attractions and activities.
Vancouver enjoys a relatively mild Pacific Northwest climate and is one of Canada’s warmest cities in the winter, but it’s the friendly, welcoming nature of its citizens that truly brings warmth to
its visitors.
