WHEN MEDICINE AND DRIVING DON’T MIX
AAA leads the charge to address a major prescription for trouble
We are an overprescribed America – the U.S. represents under 5% of the world’s population but consumes about 80% of the world’s prescription drugs. Federal statistics suggest that 1 in every 10 people get behind the wheel after using prescription or over-the-counter medicines that can impair driving. These include sleep aids, anti-anxiety drugs and even allergy medicines. But, not all prescription and over-the-counter drugs affect driving. The challenge for all of us is knowing when we are safe, and when to be concerned.
Over the course of the past three decades, society has come to frown on drunk driving. In fact, an overwhelming majority of drivers (94%) consider driving after drinking alcohol a serious threat to their personal safety. But, only 78% of drivers feel the same way about driving after use of prescription drugs.
“AAA is focused on raising public awareness about the risks of driving while impaired by medications purchased over the counter or prescribed by a doctor,” said Vicki Bechtel, Vice President of Operations. “Social change is never easy, but AAA is committed to using a combination of research, advocacy and education to make an impact.”
Drug-impaired driving is a complicated issue with no easy fixes. Fortunately, there are actions each of us can take starting today to curb our own risk of driving impaired when it comes to prescription and over-the-counter drugs.
AAA already has a research-based tool available to help people know when to broach the topic, and to prepare you to have informed conversations about medicines and driving. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety developed AAA
