AAA TRAVEL'S CRUISE & TOUR SALE • SEPTEMBER 14-28
EXPLORING ALASKA BY LAND
By Mary Hitcho, AAA Northampton County Travel Agent
It is said that only 30% of tourists see Mt. Denali in all its splendor. Add a land tour to your Alaskan cruise to make a complete Alaskan experience.
I traveled with Royal Caribbean/Celebrity on a land package itinerary beginning in Fairbanks, continuing to Denali, Talkeetna, Kenai Peninsula, and concluding in Anchorage.
The historic city of Fairbanks is best known for gold mining. Gold was discovered in 1902 and can still be found today when tourists pan for gold while on an excursion to Gold Dredge 8. In addition to panning for gold, tour the town, see a section of the Alaskan Pipeline and enjoy a folkloric
show. Next stop, Denali National Park.
Choose between two tours of Denali National Park. The Natural History Tour or the Tundra Tour; they differ by time and distance. Board a “school bus” type of vehicle driven by a park expert for an adventure into a land of beauty, clear air, and a potential sighting of Mt. Denali’s wildlife. The Natural History Tour is 4 to 5 hours and travels 19 miles into the park, whereas the Tundra Tour is 7 to 9 hours and travels 60 miles into the park.
All aboard the Alaskan Rail traveling south to
Talkeetna. Four hours on the domed rail car offers scenery of snowcapped mountains, rivers, forests and secluded homes. The Alaskan Rail is the means of transportation pulling all the cruise line domed rail cars. The rail car is quite
comfortable, with ample walking area, lunch and cocktails are available. Talkeetna is a lively town. Our hotel offered a fantastic view of Mt. Denali. Although the mountain is 60 miles away, the view is spectacular.
On the scenic Kenai
Peninsula marine life is
abundant. Board a boat for
a scenic cruise in search of
harbor seals, whales, porpoise and birds.
In addition to the included sightseeing on Alaska land tours there are many optional excursions offered throughout the vast land of our 49th state. You can choose to enhance your trip by boating, flightseeing, glacial landing, learning about dog mushing, and Iditarod training or zip lining.
Anchorage is a city that offers numerous hotels, restaurants, cultural centers and, of course, scenic mountain ranges.
Alaska bookings begin in September for the following year. The season is mid-May through early September. Weather and cost vary, so book early to secure the travel time best suited to your needs.
