 FALL 2020
AAA NORTHAMPTON COUNTY LOSES A LEGEND By Vicki Bechtel
Vice President Operations
On June 17, 2020, Mary G. Cappadona, retired Executive Vice President and current Board Member of AAA Northampton County passed away.
This article is a tribute to Cappadona and her dedication to AAA.
When Mary was hired in June 1950, she never imagined her job at AAA Northampton County would turn into a career. Throughout the years, she learned many job duties, until she became Executive Vice President in 1975. Then in 1976, just one year later, became a Board Member. A work relationship that lasted 70 years!
I first met Mary in 1985, when I had to deliver documents from the AAA Club I was working for in New Jersey to AAA Northampton County. Prior to meeting her, I remember feeling anxious. All because when I mentioned to my fellow co-workers that day where I was going, every employee had the same response, “good luck, you better do everything right, she’s a tough one,” and I will say they were right!
It wasn’t until June 1997 when I began my AAA career with AAA Northampton County that I had the privilege of really getting to know Mary. By that time, she was retired from her position as Executive Vice President and was serving solely as a Board Member, but that never changed her focus. She always worked towards what best served our members, employees and the club.
Mary loved working for AAA. I can remember how her face would light up and her voice would project when she’d tell me about how she had the opportunity to represent AAA Northampton County at a AAA National or Pennsylvania Federation meeting. She reminded
me how important it is to develop strong working
relationships
with your
fellow AAA Clubs, something that has stuck with me to this day. We often reminisced about the old days of AAA and how things have changed. It was the change
to the use of
computers that
contributed to Mary’s decision to retire in 1995.
But, even in retirement she continued to share her knowledge to empower current AAA staff and people in general to help them achieve success.
I looked up to Mary and admired her accomplishments. The club experienced significant membership growth during her tenure, she assisted in the relocation of the office from Wilson Boro, Pennsylvania to its current location on Hecktown Road, and oversaw the expansion of that location. And she looked on in 2006 as the
office she originally helped decorate was gutted and redesigned.
She was a mentor, confidant, and most importantly a friend.
