   MEDITERRANEAN CRUISING
HIGHLIGHTS OF SPAIN AND PORTUGAL
The countries of Spain and Portugal bring to mind a kaleidoscope of images – tapas, castanets, acoustic guitar rhythms, flamenco dancing and matadors. For travelers cruising the Western Mediterranean,
a journey to the Iberian Peninsula presents opportunity to explore and appreciate the cultural uniqueness of these two countries. Of particular fascination for many travelers are the grand cities
of Lisbon, Portugal and Barcelona, Spain.
The history of the vibrant city of Lisbon extends back before the Roman Empire. It is Lisbon’s position on seven low hills beside a river that originally attracted traders and settlers, and it’s still a stunning site. Wide, tree-lined avenues are accented by art nouveau buildings, mosaic pavement, and an endless stream of cafes. Its housing looks as though it suddenly leapt from an impressionist’s painting,
with low-rise, pastel and ochre brown buildings, and church towers and domes rising in the distance.
A sightseeing tour should most certainly include Geronimo’s Monastery and Belem Tower, both UNESCO World Heritage sites; the Monument to the Discoveries; and the National Museum of Coaches. If you prefer to take a walking tour of the Alfama District, step back in time as you explore the
narrow streets and alleys, squares and churches of this historic residential neighborhood; then climb to the castle at the top of the hill to take in inspiring panoramic views of the city.
Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, is widely revered as an attractive, avant-garde city – ultra-modern considering its 2,000-year-old Roman history. Poised on the Mediterranean coast, northeast of Madrid, Barcelona is a sprawling metropolis with a rich cultural heritage and innovative style, particularly in the areas of art and architecture.
Admired for its magnetic beauty and modernism, Barcelona has been dubbed “La Gran Encisera,”
the Great Enchantress. Throughout its history the city has inspired more than a few great writers and painters – Ernest Hemmingway, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali among them. So it is not surprising that this city is particularly known for its cultural interests – museums, exhibitions, open-air sculptures, concerts and plays – all of which draw visitors from around the world.
When in Barcelona, be sure to see the Picasso Museum and the famous Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, an impressive Gaudi masterpiece that has been under construction since 1882. The basilica is undeniably one of the city’s greatest tourist draws.

AVOID LONG AIRPORT LINES
If you don’t like waiting in long airport lines (and who does), consider applying for membership in the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) PreCheck program. This is an expedited security-screening program connecting travelers departing from airports within the United States with smarter security and a better air travel experience.
The TSA PreCheck program is currently available at more than 200 airports with 79 participating airlines nationwide.
Members of the PreCheck program can take advantage of dedicated screening lanes at airports, plus you can keep shoes and light jackets on, and toiletries and laptops stay in bags, so there’s no fumbling around as you approach the conveyor belt.
Kids 12 and under can get PreCheck screening for free as long as they travel with a member parent or guardian. Older kids must enroll on their own.
AAA Northampton County will host a temporary TSA PreCheck Enrollment Center
To provide AAA members and travelers a convenient way to enroll in the TSA PreCheck program, the AAA Northampton County office will serve as a temporary “pop-up” enrollment center from
