TRAVEL WITH SOMEONE YOU TRUST®
EXPLORING ICELAND WITH CIE TOURS By Diane Parkansky

CIE is popular for their many Ireland adventures, so when I was offered a chance to tour Iceland with them, I said yes! Iceland is known as the Land of Fire and Ice, but it is so much more, and a CIE tour is a wonderful way to explore Iceland. CIE offers two six-day tours – Taste of Iceland and Northern Lights Quest of Iceland. Beginning in 2023 they are offering an additional tour, Icelandic Explorer, a
9- or 10-day tour which includes Northern Iceland.
Many people visit Iceland to see the Northern Lights. September to March is the best time to see the Northern Lights, and they were stunning during our November trip. CIE offers nightly opportunities around the country to see the Northern Lights, increasing your chances of witnessing this spectacle.
In addition to searching for the Northern Lights, you’ll visit the vibrant city of Reykjavik, including Hallgrimskirkja, the towering Church of Iceland; the iconic Solfarid Sun Voyager Sculpture; and the Perlan with its sweeping views of Reykjavik.
Venture out of the city and you will experience the Golden Circle. Visit stunning Thingvellir National Park; relax in the secluded Secret Lagoon, a true Icelandic spa; enjoy fresh tomato soup at Fridheimar Tomato Farm greenhouse; witness
Strokkur Geyser’s blue bubble as it erupts; and see Gullfoss waterfall, one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world.
The next day includes two educational stops – one at the LAVA center, where you will gain an appreciation for the power of the Icelandic volcano, and the Skogar Folk Museum to learn about the lives of Iceland’s early settlers. You will also visit the towering Skogafoss waterfall and Reynisfjara’s black sand beach.
Following was my favorite day for amazing sights. We started with a morning hike through the Skaftafell Wilderness Area, climbing right up to a glacier. After lunch we visited the amazing Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon with its giant icebergs, and then Diamond Beach to marvel at the glistening natural ice sculptures. Look carefully and you might see a seal glide by.
Travel back toward Reykjavik to visit Seljalandsfoss waterfall and walk behind the falls for a view like none other. In the evening, relax at the Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa with its blue waters within the volcanic earth.
There is so much to experience in this tiny country and CIE did an amazing job presenting the sights, history and culture. I am glad Iceland is less than six hours away so I can return.
