WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT REAL ID
DO I NEED A REAL ID?
REAL ID is optional for PA residents, but if you want to use your PA Driver’s License or ID card to pass airport security, enter secure federal buildings or visit military installations, you will need to obtain
a REAL ID. If you have a valid US Passport or
US Passport Card, military ID, or another federally approved identification, you may use this as your form of identification to pass a TSA checkpoint at airports nationwide and visit a secure federal building or military installations at any time.
You do NOT need a REAL ID to do the following:
• Drive
• Vote
• Apply for or receive federal benefits for which
you are entitled (Veterans’ Affairs, Social Security
Administration, etc.)
• Enter a federal facility that does not require an ID
(i.e. a post office)
• Access a hospital or receive life-saving services • Participate in law enforcement proceedings or
investigations (serve on a federal jury, testify in federal court, etc.)
WHAT DO I NEED TO GET A REAL ID?
For customers who received their initial DL or ID BEFORE September 2003:
When you apply for a REAL ID (which will not be available until March 2019), you will need to present original versions or certified copies of the following documents, per federal regulations:
Proof of Identity
• Examples: Original or certified copy of a birth
certificate with a raised seal or valid US Passport.
If you need to obtain a copy of your birth certificate,
you need to start that process as soon as possible.
Proof of Social Security Number
• Examples: Social security card or W-2 Form that has your social security number and name and your employer’s name.
*Please note that social security card cannot be laminated or sealed in plastic.
Proof of all Legal Name Changes
• Examples: Marriage license or court order issued by your county’s family court.
*Please note: You must show a complete name change history that links your birth certificate name to your current name. If you have a valid US Passport or US Passport Card with your legal name, you may use that as your name change document.
Two Proofs of Current, Physical PA Address
• Examples: Current, unexpired PA license or ID and a no more than 90-day-old bank statement or utility bill with the same name and address
You will be able to bring your documents to any PennDOT Driver’s License Center for verification and your product will be issued to you through the mail OR if you need your REAL ID quickly, you can visit one of our ten (10) REAL ID locations throughout the state
For customers who received their initial DL or ID AFTER September 2003:
• We may have your required documents on file.
• If you are interested in obtaining a REAL ID when
they are available, you may request that we verify that your documents are on file. We will respond to you via email.
If they ARE on file, you will be able to pre-enroll in REAL ID and receive your REAL ID product in the mail when they are available.
If they are NOT on file, you will need to bring your documents in to a Driver License Center or a REAL ID Center for in-person verification.
