We are all looking for ways to save fuel and money, as well as tread more lightly on the environment. But because the long distances we travel and things we need to transport make riding a bicycle everywhere impractical, here are some ideas that will help you save money, fuel, and perhaps even the environment when driving your vehicle.
Make sure your car is in good mechanical condition.
Follow the recommendations in your owner’s manual for maintenance on your vehicle, and have a qualified technician perform an annual maintenance inspection on your vehicle. AAA has more than 7,400 Approved Auto Repair facilities throughout the U.S. and Canada that have passed rigid quality inspections and have ASE-certified technicians to inspect your vehicle. Also ask your shop if its employees are properly disposing of oil, oil filters and antifreeze in an environmentally responsible manner.
Check your tires. Check your tire pressure on a regular basis, too. Check your owner’s manual or door-post sticker for the correct pressure specifications and check the tires when they are cold before driving on them, adjusting the pressure as needed.
Plan your trips and minimize cargo weight.
Combine as many errands as possible over the most efficient routes. Keep extra weight out of your vehicle; only carry what is necessary with you.
Cut down on the air conditioning. Around town, try driving with the windows open and the air off. On the highway, however, turn the air on and shut
the windows. The open windows will create a lot of drag on your car at highway speeds and, thereby, cut fuel economy.
Take it easy. Drive smoothly and accelerate gently. Avoid quick starts and unnecessary braking by reading the road ahead. Slow down before necessary to brake, and keep your car rolling as long as possible. Avoid slamming on the brakes; this is hard on the brakes and creates unnecessary wear on the tires.
Use cruise control and obey speed limits. If you have trouble maintaining a steady speed on highways, set your cruise control to help you avoid speed changes. Obey the speed limits; along with increasing your safety, driving within the speed limit will make police happy and keep your wallet from getting lighter. Driving at 70 m.p.h. can use up to 9 percent more fuel use than driving at 60 m.p.h. Also, if you frequently drive on limited-access roads where EZ-Pass can be used, consider getting one to help save time and fuel when you’re going through tolls.
Carpool, and avoid rush hour. If possible, try to carpool with friends or coworkers to not only reduce traffic by keeping additional vehicles off the road, but to cut your overall commuting cost. Not traveling during rush hour is another way to avoid wasting gas and time sitting in traffic. If you can’t avoid it, try to look for more efficient routes to use.
If you follow these tips, you will save fuel and money while helping preserve the environment along the way.
