As driver education classes disappear from more and more high schools, more parents are finding themselves to be the “designated driving instructor” for their teen. Teaching someone
how to drive is a huge responsibility and can be overwhelming. Where and how does one start?
Actually, parents have been showing their child “how to drive” since the day they started riding in a forward-facing car seat. By the time they are
8 years old, children have developed a basic belief about driving from observing their parents and other adults behind the wheel. They’ve watched, and listened, as rules were followed (or not) and as attitudes toward other drivers where displayed.
By the time they are 16, teens have already adopted many driving habits and are just waiting to put them into practice.
Thus begins the most critical phase of a young person’s life, as car crashes remain the leading
cause of death for teens across the U.S.
How can parents prepare themselves and their
teen to safely navigate this life phase? By learning the facts behind teen crashes and taking action to protect their teen, parents can help develop a safer teen driver.
A recent list of the “Top 10 Things Many Parents Don’t Know About Teen Driving” compiled by the National Safety Council included:
• The most dangerous time of a teen driver’s life is
the first 12 months after receiving a license. • A teen driver’s crash risk is three times that of
drivers ages 20 and older.
• More than half of teens killed in car crashes were
not wearing a seatbelt.
By knowing and strictly enforcing the laws for teen drivers, parents may not win a popularity contest but will be taking the first step in protecting
their teen. Log onto www.AAA.com/TeenDriving to get the facts you need before your teen
begins to drive. AAA’s website provides parents information regarding Licensing & State Laws, Insurance & Vehicle Considerations and Driver Education options, key safety points for parents
to consider, including understanding the facts and risks before your teen gets behind the wheel.
To learn more about teen crashes, the learning- to-drive process, Pennsylvania’s Graduated Driver License Law, parent-teen driving agreements, and insurance for new drivers, join us at the next AAA Dare To Prepare Workshop. Parents and teens will come together to begin this critical phase as a team. The workshop is free of charge and open
to the public. Those who wish to attend must register in advance by contacting the Traffic Safety Department at 610-258-2371 or by e-mail to trafficsafety@aaanc.com .

AAA ROADWISE DRIVER
‘Safe Driving for Mature Operators’
Happy New Year! If you’re like most people you have created a list of resolutions for change in the new year. It’s no different at AAA Northampton County.
AAA’s Mature Operator Course has changed its name to RoadWise Driver and replaced some of yesterday’s obsolete driving techniques with more advanced techniques. Driving on today’s roadways can indeed by challenging. With new entertainment and safety technologies being built into cars, our attention can more easily be diverted from the driving task, or we can depend too much on vehicle technology. Further, congestion is increasing due to more drivers, and vehicles are becoming more complicated overall. AAA’s Roadwise Driver Course is designed to keep you up-to-date on the latest risk-reducing driving techniques.
AAA’s Roadwise Driver Course is for drivers 55 and older who want to drive safer, longer. Drivers completing the course may also receive a possible insurance discount with their current carrier. The Roadwise Driver Course is FREE of charge to AAA Northampton County members. For those who wish to attend from another AAA Club
the cost is $10 and non-member cost is $30.
Those who wish to attend must register in advance by contacting AAA Northampton County at (610) 258-2371 or by email to trafficsafety@aaanc.com.
