This year’s amazing adventure took me to South Africa with Trafalgar tour company. Trafalgar takes care of everything for you, including all transportation and attraction entrance fees, and provides a professional tour guide. Here is a day-to-day recap of what I experienced!
Day 1 – We explored the city of Cape Town and enjoyed dinner at the world-famous Gold restaurant, featuring Cape Malay cuisine and a special Djembe drumming performance.
Day 2 – We traveled along magnificent coastal roads towards Africa’s southwestern tip. The destination is spectacular, but the journey is just as amazing. We then stopped at Boulders Beach to see the penguins. What a sight to see! From there we traveled through charming coastal towns to the Cape of Good Hope. Day 3 – We traveled east along the Garden Route to Knysna. The views along the winding coastal roads are truly amazing!
Day 4 – We explored the laidback oceanside town of Knysna, then Featherbed Nature Reserve for an
exciting eco-experience and a scenic sunset cruise, dining under the stars.
Day 5 – From Knysna we traveled to Port Elizabeth and spent the morning at Tsitskikamma National Park, a verdant national park that is one of the most remarkable natural wonders in South Africa.
Day 6 – We boarded a plane for sightseeing and
a glimpse into South Africa’s tumultuous past in Johannesburg, the City of Gold. We took an Insider Tour of the city to view Mandela’s house in
Soweto and other iconic sights. We then toured
the Apartheid Museum to learn about the country’s divisive past and its continued journey to promote unity among all the people of South Africa.
Day 7 – We admired the iconic landscapes along Mpumalanga’s Panorama Route – the Blyde River Canyon, the heavenly landscapes of God’s Window, and Bourke’s Luck Potholes.
Day 8 – We were off to famous Kruger National Park to get a peek at Africa’s Big 5 animals. We explored South Africa’s oldest national park with a local expert, and yes, I saw the Big 5!
Day 9 – We began our journey back to Cape Town, stopping at a Shangaan village to learn about the Zulu nation, daily life in the village, their warrior past, ceremonies and rituals. And we sampled traditional cuisine – grilled chicken, pap and Shangaan-style cabbage.
Day 10 – We ventured to the town of Franschhoek, one of the most beautiful wine valleys in the world, then it was on to nearby Stellenbosch Kloof Valley, where the DeWaal family opened their home for wine tasting and a tour around their stunning 1791 Cape Dutch manor house.
