Ecotourism is, of course, one of
Costa Rica’s biggest draws, and
San Jose, the country’s capital,

which to begin your adventure. From here you can set out to explore the Arenal Volcano, Manuel Antonio National Park or the Cloud Forest.
A variety of hikes and tours show off the country’s many natural wonders. At the Arenal Volcano, visitors are often treated with a fantastic show of fire (from
a safe distance) thanks to the regular rock and lava eruptions.
Many of Costa Rica’s best hotels are situated in
jungle-covered hills, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Expect to spot white-faced monkeys, possibly
a three-toed sloth, colorful toucans, parrots and an abundance of butterflies. Though visitors get to view only a fraction of Costa Rica’s natural treasures,
the region has more than 800 species of birds, 205 varieties of mammals and 378 different amphibians

Costa Rica’s sensitivity to the ecology and dedication to its preservation have created a system of protected lands that cover more than 25 percent of
its land area. Much of that area can be used as a playground for a wide range of sporting activities, including windsurfing, kayaking, hiking and hot
air ballooning. The adventurous can zip line through the verdant Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, while those looking for a bit tamer experience can take a canopy tour through the trees.
For more extreme thrills, try white water rafting or bungee jumping from a bridge over the Colorado River (located just a half an hour from San Jose).
Such experiences provide a glorious sense of freedom that’s hard to describe, but the locals know it well.
