Checking your tread depth is simple to do, just place a penny upside down in a tread groove. If you can see all of President Lincoln’s head, your tire’s tread is worn beyond the legal limit and tire replacement is necessary.
Maintaining your tire pressure should also be added to your winter weather checklist. When cold temperatures are upon us you can lose
up to 10% of your tire pressure as air
molecules reduce in size. A tire that is
under inflated by only 8 PSI can reduce
the vehicle’s fuel economy up to 2%
effecting your drive and efficiency.
Correcting this is an easy way to save
money and wear and tear on your
vehicle and tires.
All tire manufacturers recommend checking tire pressures when they are cold, at least 4 hours after the vehicle was last driven. Always use an accurate tire pressure gauge, making sure the tire valve is free of debris and water.
The correct tire pressure is specified by the vehicle manufacturer, not by the original equipment tire producer. The proper inflation levels can be found on a label affixed to the inside of your vehicle’s left front door jamb and/or in your owner’s manual.
If you live in an area where the temperatures remain below 45 degrees for an entire season, you should consider utilizing a set of winter tires. Winter tires remain pliable in cold temperatures and grip the
road far better in snow and ice. While there is a cost
to purchase initially, they save wear on your other three season tires, and possibly save you your collision deductible when an otherwise eminent accident is
avoided thanks to their use.
Remember rotating your tires regularly promotes even tread wear. To achieve this tires should be rotated every 5,000 - 8,000 miles.
Checking and adjusting your alignment annually also prevents uneven tire wear. At the same time tire balance should be inspected.

Winter Tire Tips

Winter is upon us and a good, solid grip is not only important for the shoes on your feet, but also vital for the ‘shoes’ on your car; your tires.
Driving with under-inflated and/ or low-tread depth tires can be troublesome, especially during the wet and slippery winter months. Tires play a part in everything, from braking and steering to fuel
efficiency. Additionally, much like your shoes, they are the only link between yourself and the ground.
The key to good grip is inspecting and staying in touch with your tire’s condition as they wear. Most importantly, regularly measure your tread depth. Tires must be replaced when the tread becomes worn to 2/32nds of an inch, the lowest legal limit. I suggest replacing them before they reach this stage depending upon your drive, both geographically and the type of road conditions. Also take time to inspect your tires making sure there are no sidewall cuts, or nails/screws embedded in the tread.
