TAILGATING 101
Smart Power, Big Fun!
Going to the game this season? Before you stock up and head to the parking lot for a little pre-game fun, check out these quick tips and information to ensure your vehicle starts long after the game ends.
QUICK CHECK LIST:
Ensure your battery is in good shape
• Have your battery tested by AAA prior to
heading to the game.
• Look at the year of production on your
battery (typical life is 3-5 years). If your battery is older than this, consider a proactive battery replacement.
Know your battery RC or Ah capacity
• RC (Reserve Capacity) is the number of minutes a fully charged battery at 80°F (27°C) is discharged at 25 amps before voltage falls below 10.5 volts.
• Ah (Amp Hour) is the energy a battery can deliver continuously for 20 hours at 80°F (27°C) without falling below 10.5 volts.
• In both cases, the larger the number, the longer you can run accessories before having to charge the battery.
Pick the correct inverter for your
estimated use
• lifewire.com/find-the-right-inverter-size-534680
contains specific instructions on how to choose an inverter that will meet your power demand needs and even has a couple of handy tables to help estimate power draw of common devices.
• Consider an additional battery or devices
• Long days of continuous power may require
more than your battery can deliver, or you may just want additional peace of mind. It may be beneficial to purchase a second battery for use in these cases. Most marine batteries have additional terminals to mount inverters or accessories and are a great alternative to using your vehicle’s battery.
• Should you decide to stick with your vehicle battery, you may want to consider an alternative jump pack or a solar trickle charger to ensure you can crank your vehicle after all the fun.
Regardless of which sport you enjoy; we hope you have a great time tailgating! We hope these tips help and ensure you have enough juice to start your vehicle at the end of the day. If not, rest assured our AAA Roadside Technicians will be able to help with batteries on hand!
ASK THE TECH

Question: I was told I have a cabin filter in my car and it needs to be changed. What is a cabin filter and what does it do for me in the car?
Answer: The cabin filter in your vehicle serves the purpose of filtering the air that enters through your heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. As you drive, the fresh air entering this system is filtered of dust, pollen, mold, spores, etc. It is very beneficial to the passengers in the car as well as the car itself. The cabin filter can cut down on allergens and nuisance dust and debris from entering the cabin and also helps in keeping the system ductwork clean.
Manufacturer recommended service interval for the cabin filter varies from 10,000 to 20,000 miles or annually. If you drive in heavy traffic or very dusty conditions, service intervals will be less.
The filters are commonly located in the dash behind the glove compartment, requiring a half hour or less to replace on most vehicles.
It is worth noting that not every vehicle has a cabin filter installed, but the trend is that most late model vehicles do have them. If you are not sure whether you have one or not, check your vehicle owner’s manual.
