FALL 2022

An adventurer’s paradise, Belize is a peaceful, English-speaking country with parks and natural preserves covering more than 40 percent of the land, offering a diversity of adventure opportunities.
Located on the Caribbean coast in Central America, nestled between Mexico and Guatemala, Belize has an intriguing mix of tropical forests rich with wildlife, majestic 3,675-foot mountains, and mysterious Maya temples. The diving and fishing experiences are equal to anywhere in the Caribbean.
In a single day you can go from tropical forests to the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere – second in length only to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. And when you snorkel at Goff’s Caye, a small coral island that sits atop the reef, you’ll find myriad fish with visibility that commonly reaches 100-plus feet in water temperature that hovers around 80 degrees.
The capital of Belize City is the gateway to all of the country’s historical and adventure destinations. Attractions within the city include the oldest Anglican cathedral church in Central America, St. John’s Cathedral, the lighthouse monument at Ft. George Point and the Museum of Belize. Just outside of the city, the Baboon Sanctuary is a must-see for animal lovers. It’s a unique place where villagers of the area have committed to preserving the habitat necessary to ensure a healthy population of howler monkeys.
A thousand years ago, Belize was populated by over one million Maya Indians. Today, you can hardly travel the country without observing some evidence of that civilization’s past. There are many fascinating ruins to explore, but Altun
Ha is the most notable and well-excavated, consisting of two main plazas with some 13 temples and residential structures.
Despite its rich Mayan legacy and eco-tourism opportunities, most travelers come to Belize again and again for the world-class diving and snorkeling opportunities. The most well-known diving spot in Belize, and perhaps the Caribbean, is the Blue Hole, located in the center of Lighthouse Reef Atoll, about 50 miles east of Belize City. Originally a cave, the roof fell in about 10,000 years ago, creating an almost perfect circular hole that’s 1,000 feet in diameter and 412 feet deep. A variety of dive operators can provide day or overnight diving trips to this magnificent natural wonder, which is visible from outer space.
