What You Need to Know About Foreign Travel Money
Even seasoned travelers like AAA members can’t anticipate every financial need, so it’s important to consider all
your options and select a combination of financial products for your trip abroad. Experts recommend using
a portfolio of the following
types of money, rather than relying on any single form when traveling abroad.
Here are a few tips to consider about foreign travel money:
EUROS
Since adopting the euro in 2002, most merchants in those 18 European countries comprising the euro zone no longer accept their previous “legacy” currencies. Euro is one of the most commonly sold currencies.
TRAVELERS CHECKS
Travelers checks are accepted in many countries. They are legendary for travelers, because if they’re lost or stolen they can usually be replaced within 24 hours.
When traveling in Europe, most merchants do not accept travelers checks, so you should cash them at a bank for the best rate. Since banks and exchange houses regularly charge a fee for each U.S. dollar travelers check converted, it’s best to use higher denominations to minimize fees.
TRAVEL MONEY CARDS
Travel Money cards are a convenient way to travel in areas with abundant ATMs and merchants accepting plastic cards such as credit or debit cards. Purchasers will experience exchange rates and fees, and ATM charges usually apply. When withdrawing cash, withdraw
the largest allowable amount to keep ATM fees to a

The Key to Perfect Hotel and Restaurant Choices
ROBERT W. WACHTER
Chief Executive Officer
After awarding eligible properties the premier designation of quality –
AAA Approved – AAA assigns
a rating of one to five AAA Diamonds. While the Approved designation ensures members a clean and reliable hotel or restaurant experience, the number of Diamonds indicates the extensiveness of services,
AAA must first meet 27 basic lodging requirements or 11 basic restaurant requirements based on member expectations. Applicants do not pay any fees to become AAA Approved and Diamond rated; this data is gathered as a service to AAA members.
Unlike rating systems based on unverified sources, random consumer comments, and freelance travel writer reviews, AAA’s extensive guidelines are based
on industry standards, member preferences, and the professional insight of 65 full-time professional evaluators. Only properties that meet the quality criteria to become AAA Approved are assigned a Diamond rating. Annual visits ensure Approved hotels and restaurants continue to meet AAA’s high standards.
WHERE TO FIND THE DIAMOND RATINGS
Locate AAA Diamond-rated establishments in print and aaa.com TourBook listings. On AAA.com, book Diamond-rated hotels at great rates. To find Diamond- rated hotels and restaurants along your travel route, use the members-only Internet TripTik on aaa.com or the free, scaled-down version available to all travelers at AAAmaps.com.
facilities, and environment provided, from basic to moderate to world class.
Together, these distinct facets of the AAA Diamond Rating process provide members with the key to perfect hotel and restaurant choices – experiences that meet their expectations. Using the AAA Diamond ratings, members can select from nearly 57,000 quality
hotels and restaurants across North America and
the Caribbean, quickly and easily, every time.
