REAL ID in Pennsylvania
MEMBER SERVICES
visit PennDOT.gov/REALID and click on the “Pre-Verification” icon.
If you already have a passport, you can certainly get a REAL ID, but TSA considers a current passport acceptable identification for boarding an aircraft.
If you have a passport or passport card and want
a REAL ID, PennDOT recommends that you wait until your next renewal to get one and avoid the initial rush.

Information provided by PennDOT
You may have some questions about REAL ID. Can I use my Pennsylvania license to fly? Does the new driver’s license design mean it’s REAL ID-compliant? What IS REAL ID anyway? Fortunately, we’ve got answers. And it’s not
as confusing as you may think.
Beginning October 1, 2020, Pennsylvanians will
need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, photo ID card, or another form of federally acceptable identification (such as a valid passport or military ID) to board a domestic commercial flight or enter a federal building or military installation that requires ID.
REAL IDs will be available in spring 2019 to Pennsylvanians who want one.
If you do decide to upgrade to a REAL ID, you’ll pay a one-time fee of $30 and a renewal fee (which is currently $30.50 for a standard, non-commercial driver’s license), but the expiration date on your new REAL ID will include any time left on your current product, PLUS another four years. So, if your license is set to expire in October 2020, but you upgrade to a REAL ID in October 2019, your new REAL ID-compliant license won’t expire until October 2024.
At this point, the best thing you can do to prepare for REAL ID is to get your documents together. Federal regulations require that PennDOT must verify the following documents for a customer before issuing a REAL ID-compliant product:
• Proof of identity (original or certified copy of a birth certificate with a raised seal or valid U.S. passport)
• Proof of Social Security number (Social Security card, cannot be laminated)
• Proof of all legal name changes (marriage certificate or court order issued by your county’s family court)
• Two proofs of current, physical PA address (examples include a current, unexpired PA license or ID and a no more than 90-day-old bank statement or utility bill with the same name and address)
If you got your first Pennsylvania license or ID since September 2003, it’s possible that PennDOT already has your verified documents on file and you will not need to present them again. If you fall into this category and would like PennDOT
to check your record for this documentation,
