MOROCCO: A NORTH AFRICAN GEM
The North African country of Morocco, which borders the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, offers travelers a colorful tapestry of cultural and adventurous experiences.
The country’s unique geography spans from the Atlantic Ocean, to mountainous areas, to the Sahara Desert, and its people enjoy a Mediterranean climate similar to Southern California.
Morocco’s intriguing city of Marrakesh, a former imperial city in western Morocco, offers numerous mosques, palaces and gardens. The medina, a walled medieval city, dates to the Berber Empire. The medina features mazelike alleys where souks (marketplaces) sell traditional textiles, pottery and jewelry. The 12th- century Koutoubia Mosque, a Moorish minaret standing majestically over the city, can be seen from miles away. Spend an afternoon at Djemaa el-fna, where food vendors line a broad square where storytellers and musicians perform. Or visit stately Bahia Palace. Built in the 19th century, the palace features interesting Islamic and Moorish architecture.
In the coastal capital city of Rabat there’s opportunity to explore numerous historical sites and monuments. Be sure to see the Chellah, a medieval fortified Muslim necropolis; stroll through the lovely Andalusian Gardens; and visit Dar al-Makhzen, the official residence of the king of Morocco. Rabat is also known
as having one of Morocco’s most pleasurable medinas, which is listed as a World Heritage Site. Shop for leather footwear and other leather products at a good price. Berber carpets and embroidered fabrics, as well as copper items, jewelry, lamps and antiques are also available for purchase by Rabat’s street vendors.
Morocco’s largest city is Casablanca, a lively hub of commerce where tall, modern buildings line major tree-lined thoroughfares. Walk through the city’s medina and explore the downtown area with its many Art Deco buildings. Be sure to also visit the Hassan II Mosque, the largest mosque in Africa, which took over seven years and 10,000 craftsmen to construct. Built as a tribute to the former King of Morocco, the mosque blends traditional Moorish architecture with 20th century innovation.
For an adventurous and peaceful experience in southern Morocco, venture into the Sahara Desert with its vast expanses of sand dunes and travel on camelback, visiting an oasis where comfortable tented camps await your arrival. Spend the night here, rising in the morning to witness a glorious sunrise over the dunes, and perhaps reflect on the amazing experience that is Morocco.
