SUMMER 2022
RIDING THE RAILS ABOARD THE
ROCKY MOUNTAINEER
By Rosemary Brewer AAA Travel Agent
In October 2021 I had the privilege of participating in the Rocky Mountaineer Rockies to the Red Rocks tour, eastbound. It was a fabulous trip!
DAY 1
I flew into Salt Lake City and took an Uber to my downtown hotel. I could also have taken the light rail downtown. I walked from my downtown Marriott hotel to the Mormon sites, toured the Beehive house, and learned about Mormon history. Salt Lake City has an interesting and walkable downtown.
DAY 2
This afternoon we took a four-hour transfer from Salt Lake City to Moab by bus, where I enjoyed gorgeous and ever-changing scenery along the way. Flying into Moab is also a good option.
DAY 3
It is important that you book extra excursions/ tours for the national parks Arches and Canyonlands so you too can have stunning tours of these
parks. Fall is a perfect time to visit, with cooler temperatures but shorter days.
We had amazing views of Canyonlands from Dead Horse point. A two-night stay minimum in the Moab area is recommended to see Arches and Canyonlands. Active people who hike, bike, etc. might want to stay longer.
We boarded the Rocky Mountaineer train in the afternoon. Our train hosts were knowledgeable and hospitable. They entertained us with interesting narration along the trip. The Rocky Mountaineer train rides on the historic Denver and Rio Grande line now owned by Union Pacific. The tracks follow the Colorado River for a good portion of the trip. The scenery is stunning and varied, and you may even catch sight of interesting wildlife along the way! The train itself is very comfortable, with roomy seats. There is a small outdoor platform to get some fresh air.
We rolled into Glenwood Springs about 8:00 p.m. and went to our hotel.
DAY 4
More gorgeous scenery on this day of travel through the Colorado Rockies and the Continental Divide, 9,000 feet above sea level. We pulled into Denver about 5:00. Rocky Mountaineer uses The
Maven, the Indigo, Rally and Crawford hotels. All are downtown and close to Union Station.
This trip is great for train enthusiasts who want to ride these historic rails and be pampered and fed well! It is also perfect for people who want to enjoy the varied scenery that the American West has to offer. I hope to see you at AAA soon to help you book your Rocky Mountaineer adventure!
