Once known as the Cancun-Tulum Corridor, the beautiful Riviera Maya, which lies to the south of Cancun in the eastern portion of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, is today a coastal haven for adventure enthusiasts and beach lovers. With a diversity of flora and fauna, and lush jungle, visitors find
many eco-tourist activities that the entire family can enjoy.
The region is famous for its expansive white sand beaches, all-inclusive hotels, water sports activities with underwater caverns and lagoons, and revered archaeological sites. One of its major attractions are coastal and reef aquatic activities dependent on the coastal water of the Belize Barrier Reef, which is the second longest in the world. Cenote Dos Ojos is one of the most extravagant diving sites in the Yucatan peninsula. It is also one of the largest underwater cave systems, with plenty of natural light and amazing visibility for snorkelers and divers.
Throughout the Riviera Maya, sports activities dominate the scene, with plenty of opportunity for water activities such as jet-skiing, snorkeling, sailing, horseback riding, ATV riding, and even swimming with dolphins.
Xcaret is a must-see destination when visiting the Riviera Maya. Mexico’s “sacred paradise” was opened in December 1990 as an eco-archeological park where visitors can enjoy the splendor of Mexico’s biodiversity and cultural heritage. Attractions include underground rivers, beach, lagoon and pools, tropical jungle trail, and rotating scenic tower. You may also choose to enjoy a day of adventure at Xplor Park with all-inclusive access to underground river trips, amphibious vehicle trails, and zip lines. Paddle, swim, drive, and soar: all equipment is provided.
Guided jungle tours and archaeological sites are also a big tourist draw in the Playa del Carmen area. Immerse yourself in the mystery of Mayan culture at Coba and Tulum, two of the most important Maya archaeological sites in the area. Explore the temples and pyramids of Tulum, and at Coba climb to the top of Nohoch Muul – the tallest pyramid
on the Yucatan Peninsula.
Tantalizing dining options, entertaining shows and Caribbean-style accommodations with holistic spas are plentiful in the Riviera Maya, with a wide choice of hotels to meet your tastes, style and budget. Vacation rentals are another popular option.
