HOW DO I PREPARE MY CAR FOR WINTER DRIVING?
By Bruce Phillips, Approved Auto Repair Manager
The right mindset for wintertime driving is to prepare your vehicle for the worst possible winter driving conditions we would normally expect for the Central Penn region. It is essential that you preplan this because winter puts unusual demands on your vehicle’s parts and equipment. Failure to do so could cause a life-threatening situation.
WINTER MAINTENANCE
The first step in preparing your vehicle is to have any needed maintenance performed by a competent repair facility. AAA has a program of Approved Auto Repair (AAR) facilities throughout the U.S. and Canada that have passed a stringent battery of requirements to be in its program. For locations in your area go to AAA.com/automotive/autorepair.
Make an appointment with one of these facilities and have them check all needed maintenance items. This can include doing an oil change, checking fluid levels, checking the battery charge and condition, and the antifreeze. Other areas that should be looked at include the heater and defrosting system, all interior and exterior lights (particularly headlights), taillights, brake lights, and turn signals. An item often overlooked is windshield wipers, which should clear the windows properly. It’s a wise investment to put special winter wiper blades on to help prevent them from freezing up.
When the garage does your service, ask them about the condition of the battery and charging/ starting systems, because if any of the components are weak or out of specification, now is the time to replace them, not during the middle of a blizzard. Tires should be checked for adequate tread depth by the garage and if they are 3/32 of an inch or less, it would be a good idea to replace them with a high-quality set of all-season radial tires that are good for all types of weather conditions. Snow chains are a good investment if you get into occasional deep snow, but make sure you have them on before you need them; practice putting them on in your driveway while the weather is still good, so you know how to install them. Special snow tires or studded tires are only needed for those who will be traveling off road in snow or into areas that get high accumulations of snow on a regular basis.
