BIG CHANGES ARE COMING TO THE OHIO BMV
Deborah Barga, CEO, AAA Shelby County
In an effort to ensure greater security and comply with the REAL ID Act passed by Congress in 2005, which
adopted the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations for a “set standard for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver licenses,” the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) is set to make big changes.
2020 for access to federal facilities, such as military bases or boarding any commercial aircrafts, as it is not a compliant card; therefore, rendering your originally-issued four-year standard ID to a two-year lifespan instead.
If you choose the new option for a compliant card at your next ID renewal, you will be required to present additional documentation. You will need to prove all elements of your secure information before you can obtain a compliant ID. These elements include your full legal name, date of birth, social security number, proof of a permanent Ohio residency, and your citizenship or legal presence in the U.S.
This is where it can get a bit tricky for some customers. Imagine if you have changed your name multiple times
due to marriages and/ or divorces. You will need to provide a
chain of events for all
of those name changes with legal documents outlining those changes. This reminds me that I will need to locate and
dust off my marriage license, which was issued 31 years ago, before my next visit to the local BMV. I will also need
to provide the BMV with documents such as my certified birth certificate to prove not only my date of birth, but also my legal presence and full legally given name. I will also need to locate a social security card or another acceptable document to prove that information. Then, for proof of my current Ohio residency, I will need to locate not one but two recently issued acceptable documents with my name and address as proof that I reside at that location.
Did I mention that this process could be a bit tricky? That is why I hope you will remain patient and rely on your local BMV for their help during the transition. Keep in mind
that they are also navigating through this new, sometimes challenging process. There are bound to be some hiccups along the way.
If you would like more information, go online to OhioBMV.gov or call your local BMV office.

Federal requirements establish minimum security standards for state-issued driver licenses and identification (ID) cards, and prohibit federal agencies like the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) and military bases from accepting
these from states
that do not meet
these requirements.
These changes, while
they may be a bit
painful, will lead to a
more secure method
of national travel
security.
One noticeable change is the new card will arrive in the mail. Rest assured Ohio is not alone in this process as it joins 41 other states to provide these driver licenses and ID cards through the mail. This also aligns with the federal government, which has been mailing out passports for many years.
This new form of issuance will allow for a single, central point of production for state-issued licenses and ID cards beginning July 2, 2018. These documents, currently available at a local BMV, will no longer be produced while customers wait.
Beginning in July, all Ohio BMV customers set to renew their IDs will be offered the choice between a standard card or compliant card. If you choose the standard
card, you will not be required to bring any additional documentation other than what is currently in place today. However, those IDs will not be valid beginning in October
