WHEN MEDICINE AND DRIVING DON’T MIX
AAA leads the charge to address a major prescription for trouble
We are an overprescribed America – the U.S. represents under 5% of the world’s population but consumes about 80% of the world’s prescription drugs. Federal statistics suggest that 1 in every
10 people get behind the wheel after using prescription or over-the-counter medicines that
can impair driving. These include sleep aids, anti- anxiety drugs and even allergy medicines. But, not all prescription and over-the-counter drugs affect driving. The challenge for all of us is knowing when we are safe, and when to be concerned.
Over the course of the past three decades, society has come to frown on drunk driving. In fact, an overwhelming majority of drivers (94%) consider driving after drinking alcohol a serious threat to their personal safety. But, only 78% of drivers feel the same way about driving after use of prescription drugs.
“AAA is focused on raising public awareness about the risks of driving while impaired by medications purchased over the counter or prescribed by a doctor,” said an AAA representative. “Social change is never easy, but AAA is committed to using a combination of research, advocacy and education to make an impact.”
Drug-impaired driving is a complicated issue with no easy fixes. Fortunately, there are actions each of us can take starting today to curb our own risk of driving impaired when it comes to prescription and over-the-counter drugs.
AAA already has a research-based tool available to help people know when to broach the topic, and to prepare you to have informed conversations about medicines and driving. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety developed AAA Roadwise Rx, a free, confidential and interactive online program that flags potential conflicts between driving and your medications.
All of us need to become better advocates for ourselves during visits to the doctor, or when filling a prescription at the pharmacy. AAA recommends
being proactive by asking your doctor or pharmacist about how the medications you take could affect your ability to drive.
In fact, AAA research suggests that only about half of doctors mention potential driving risks when prescribing medications to their patients. Putting the topic on the table for discussion is your best shot at getting answers, and AAA Roadwise Rx can help you do it. Learn more at AAA.com/RxDrugs.

Keep these questions in mind when your doctor prescribes a new medicine, or when you pick up a medication from the pharmacy:
• Will this prescription affect my driving?
• Will it interact with other drugs I’m using to affect my driving?
• Are there other medication options that will treat my health issue without affecting my driving?
• Can I adjust when I use this medication so that it won’t affect my driving?
