In Iceland, your U.S. driver’s license is valid. Italy
requires visitors to carry a U.S. driver’s license and an International Driving Permit (IDP).
More than 150 countries accept IDPs as a legal identification document that translates U. S. driver’s license information into 10 foreign languages.
The U.S. Department of State authorizes AAA to issue IDPs. That “p” stands for permit – not license. That is a critical distinction. Online scammers offer an “international driver’s license” which may look official, with your digital photo and a (meaningless) barcode. Only the IDP is legally recognized.
Apply for your IDP no more than six months in advance of your departure. The process is easy:
• Download and complete an application from
www.AAA.com/IDP
• Bring the completed application with two signed, original passport pictures to your nearest AAA office. (You can get photos taken at AAA, too.)
• Present your valid U.S. driver’s license. • Pay a permit fee of $20.

Apply for your IDP by mail
A complete application consists of: IDP application form, two signed, original passport photos, a photocopy of the front and back of your valid U.S. driver’s license, and payment.
Check for payment options with your local AAA office before you mail your application to them. Fees must be paid in U.S. dollars, by U.S. bank checks that have your name and address printed on the check, money orders payable to AAA, or major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover). Credit card orders require the number, expiration date, and note authorizing AAA to pay the $20 fee.
