AUTUMN DRIVING CAN BE TRICKY
MEMBER SERVICES
TM
It’s getting to be that time of year again! The days are getting shorter and the kids are going back to school. Autumn can be a busy time of year on the roadways, and drivers need to modify their habits and pay attention to the different types of hazards that come with the change of seasons.
With schools back in session, that means more little pedestrians to watch out for, school buses and school zone speed limits.
Those 15- or 20-mph school zone speed limits may seem ridiculously slow, but they’re there for the protection of both pedestrians and vehicles operating around the school. Whether you agree with them or not, please obey those limits. School zones are often well-patrolled by law enforcement as well, even on days when school is not in session, so don’t take a chance.
Watch out around school buses too. When you’re approaching a stopped school bus with its red signal lights flashing, by law you must stop whether you’re behind the bus, approaching from the front or approaching an intersection where a bus is stopped. The only exception is when you’re traveling on the opposite side of a divided roadway from the stopped bus (such divisions are defined by concrete or metal barriers, guide rails or dividing sections with grass, trees, shrubs, rocks, etc.). You must stop at least 10 feet away from the bus, and you must wait until the red lights stop flashing
and the stop arm has been withdrawn before proceeding. Also, make certain that all children who exited the bus have gotten to a place of safety before you move (PennDOT’s “School Bus Stopping Law Fact Sheet”).

When the time comes, drivers should remember to note the dates and times of trick-or-treat in their community so they can be on the lookout for little superheroes, monsters, ghosts and goblins. Costumes can limit the wearer’s field of vision, which, coupled with the other unsafe behaviors often exhibited by young pedestrians, could make a dangerous situation even worse. Extreme caution, therefore, should be exercised around Halloween at those times.
Mid- to late-autumn usually brings cool, rainy days and nights. Fog often forms and wet, or even icy leaves on the roadway introduce yet another hazard of which to be wary. Leaves can be extremely slippery and sometimes cover up deep potholes, bumps in the road, or conceal roadway markings. Be sure to slow down on leaf-covered roads, or when approaching a patch of leaves to avoid losing traction and control of your vehicle, especially when making turns, and allow plenty of stopping distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you.

Opting Out
While we are permitted by law to disclose the information collected within the AAA family to non-affiliated
Never drive through a pile of leaves. In addition to the possibility of running over some hidden object that could puncture a tire, leaf piles are inviting places for children to play and burrow into. Parking on top of a pile of dry leaves also should be avoided, since heat from the exhaust system or catalytic converter could provide an ignition source and start a fire.
Lastly, watch out for large animals! Autumn is mating season for deer and other animals, and a buck chasing a doe won’t be paying much attention to oncoming traffic. Hunting activity can also flush animals onto roadways during the season, so a little extra caution on your part can keep you from having a really bad day. Get in the habit of scanning the roadway, and its edges, well ahead of your vehicle when traveling through areas frequented by animals, especially at night or during other periods of low visibility.
With safety in mind, be sure to get out there and enjoy this beautiful time of the year before winter sets in upon us once more.
