Escape the Chill!
Find a Slice of Paradise in the
Hawaiian Islands
By Judie L. Karhan
The islands of Hawaii are strewn like sparkling jewels in the Pacific Ocean, enticing travelers to explore their unique geographical features, expansive blue seas, and cultural traditions. Landscapes of lush mountainsides, dramatic waterfalls, swaying palms, and miles upon miles of pristine coastline are certainly enough to satiate the desires of any adventurous sun-seeker.
On the island of Oahu, you will discover an eclectic blend of cultural diversity and important historical sites. An introduction to this island begins in the capital city of Honolulu, which buzzes with activity – high-rise hotels, high-end shopping, celebrity chef-owned restaurants, and glitzy nightlife. When the sun sets over the Pacific, enjoy magnificent views from your

oceanfront hotel of surfers catching the last waves of the day at famous Waikiki Beach. While in Honolulu, visit historic Pearl Harbor, home of the USS Arizona and the battleship Missouri, as well as the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
In contrast to the bright city lights of Honolulu, a visit to the Big Island of Hawaii brings tranquility with the calming sound of the seas and the rich aroma of coffee plantations. The Big Island is especially known for its black sand beaches and volcanic activity. At the UNESCO-listed Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, gain a deeper understanding of how the molten earth has shaped these volcanic islands.
While all of the Hawaiian Islands share certain attributes, they each have their own characteristics as well. On Maui, you’ll find a seaside playground with 120 miles of coastline and more than 30 miles of white sand beaches. Sports activities such as snorkeling, sport fishing and championship golf take centerstage, but the sightseeing is just as memorable. Visit the Maui Ocean Center, which protects such species as Pacific corals, Hawaiian green sea turtles and sharks. Journey deep into Maui’s countryside and you will discover a different side to the island with rich agricultural farms.
Kauai, known as “The Garden Isle,” is a postcard-perfect example of a tropical island paradise in the Pacific. With its lush rainforests, waterfalls, dramatic coastal cliffs and valleys, it seems that few trappings of the modern world have touched this beautiful place. Visit a Grove Farm Sugar Plantation, take in dramatic views of the Waimea Canyon, and immerse yourself in the laid-back lifestyle of the locals.
