Rare has been the day
when I haven’t touted
the benefits of travel. I know
of very few things that can broaden one’s horizons or restore the soul the way a great vacation will. Consequently, I believe everyone should make it a practice to travel, and to do so frequently.
volunteer projects such as helping with construction of schools or water wells, working side-by-side with local women to collect water, care for livestock and cook for families.
Other opportunities to enjoy purposeful travel can be found right in your suitcase. If you’re planning a trip away, pack a little lighter and use the empty space in your luggage to help others. Pack for a Purpose is
an organization that pairs travelers with the needs
of community projects from destinations around the globe in need of supplies. Travelers choose an item(s) from the specific needs list on the Pack for a Purpose website (packforapurpose.org) for the destination
or community project they wish to help. Then they deliver the items to the travel organization working with that project or destination.
A travel colleague of mine said “Travel is an incredible gift. It has the ability to open our eyes
to unique cultures and spellbinding beauty of
the natural world. However, this gift comes with a responsibility to protect the world as we know it.” I couldn’t agree more. Thus, wherever your travels take you, I hope you’ll make travel matter.
But can a vacation go beyond broadening horizons, restoration or merely providing
enjoyment to the traveler? In the last decade, vacation options that provide “purposeful” travel have become a more frequent request to the travel agent community.
When considering purposeful travel it’s important to understand that tourism is one of the biggest drivers of GDP and job growth in many nations worldwide, thus travelers essentially help to create jobs for
local community members by traveling to these destinations. But that is often not enough, particularly in many of the developing nations around the globe.
Travel vendors offering options for the traveler to engage in purposeful travel activities are growing every day. One AAA preferred travel partner company to do so is The Travel Corporation (TTC) and its family of brands.
TTC established the TreadRight Foundation, whose mission is to have a positive impact on people and communities, to protect wildlife and marine life, and to care for the planet we all call home. In concert with the TreadRight Foundation, each TTC brand is offering travel opportunities in which travelers can be involved and have a positive impact.
Additionally, TTC has established a partnership with the ME to WE organization
in an effort to enable
travelers an opportunity to book a vacation extension when visiting three iconic destinations. During
the immersive vacation extensions, travelers can contribute to more robust
